there's been one crash after another after another in san jose on northbound 87 near the 101 and first street junction. some south bay drivers say it's getting worse. nbc bay area laura sambol joins us live in san jose to explain what's going on. laura. >> reporter: just in this past year there have been at least nine accidents along this stretch of highway near where you can go north on 101 or get off on 1st street. chp says it's not a design problem. it's just that millions of people drive this stretch and many are distracted. sunday afternoon, a box truck heading north on 87 carined off the first street exit in san jose, plowed through a guardrail, and slammed into trees. the crash slowed traffic for hours. this woman drives this stretch of road nearly every day. she says she's seen more than her share of crashes here. >> maybe, like, every week. maybe like a bumper collision i would say. and just a lot of people standing on the side of the road. >> reporter: records from chp say the northbound 87/101 split near 1st street has seen 27 accidents and 10 injuries from 2015 through 2018
