[theme music] this year, san jose state university had its first case of heroin overdose. all across the country we're hearing about these problems on campuses nationwide. today, we have two in-depth discussions about the problem. [theme music] welcome back to this edition of equal time from the hd studios in the school of journalism and mass communications at san jose state. today, our focus is on drugs on the college campus. let's meet our guests. hi, i'm michael o'brien, i'm an addictions specialist and i work with people in private practice who are trying to overcome drug and alcohol problems. my name is pete decena, i'm the chief of the university police department here at san jose state. my name is jose bautista and i'm a senior here at san jose state university. and i'm shannon cruz and i'm the student correspondent for the show. alright, thank you all for being here today. you know, we should set the table for this discussio

yeah that's my experience here at san jose state. i've been doing it for 20 years and people know rucker is going to talk about it. what about in your situation? i think trepidation is a good word. there's a little bit of hesitancy. we try in the first day to break the ice so their first assignment from me is going to be to share their earliest memory in life that involves race in some way. and just sharing those personal stories is a good way to get everyone to accept each other, be more personal, see we're all people here, and go on with deeper conversations. very good. now this issue we're talking about race because in my class one of the first things we show is a 1990s news special on race. it was produced here in the bay area by one of the local television stations and it talks about race being only skin deep; now that's something that in alabama is really hard to swallow given our history. but what we want to do in that very first class is help students to look at race from different vantage points and that argument about race

san jose state is offering counseling for students and staff as long as it's necessary. ve at san jose state i'm allison smith ktvu fox 2 news. >>> sick kids end up spending more time than they want to at hospitals. >> i did my pulminary test. i had to come here to get my lungs better. >> a program that helps families during long hospital stays and the fundraiser to keep it going. >>> keeping aim at bogus reviews. why product resues on amazon may not be as beneficial as thought. >> expected to be a hot selling holiday gift. why anyone that buys a drone may have to take another step for safety. >>> amazon.com is taking aim at individuals that write fake product reviews. the online retailer filed a lawsuit against contract writers who get paid for posting glowing reviews. many have never bought the products or even used them, paid as little as $5 for a fake review. amazon is suing for an unspecified amount of damages and forcing them to stop posting the phony reviews. in april amazon sued several websites that offer to produce positive reviews. >>> if you own a drone you ma

she's a first generation college grad with degrees from both san jose state and stanford who founded help other students like her. her message even made it to the white house. we have more details o >> high school students in san francisco will have an unexpected two weeks to study for the s.a.t.s. this sign greeted more than 100 students at mission high school yesterday saying the exam was cancelled. students say they had no advance notice. they have not been told why it was suddenly called off. the nonprofit college board runs the tests and the san francisco unified school district told abc7 news it is that group's responsibility to communicate with the students about any changes. "the san francisco chronicle" reports there will be a makeup exam on october 17th at mission high school. that could mean students applying to the university of california won't have their test scores back in time to meet the application deadline of november 30th. much more ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news. bracing for record rainfall on the east coast. the severe flooding hitting south carolina this

one of the areas labeled a hot spot is here near the campus of san jose state university. the city found that over the last three years illegal dumping has increased 75% and incidents on public property has gone up 50%. unwanted items such as furniture, appliances, and trash in general are dumped on the east and west side. first time offense would be a $1,000 fine. $1500 for a second violation and $3,000 for a third. we spoke to people with attend san jose state university and work there who say it's a problem near campus. here's what they had to say about fines. >> i think they will still do it. it won't stop them but they will be a lot more careful. >> it's aggravating to have people leave their old couches and chairs. somewhere to take responsibility for getting them disposedover. >> reporter: do you think fines will help? >> it's worth a try. >> reporter: san francisco and oakland have ordnances in place to find people. san jose officials say the way they handle illegal dumping is reactive and insufficient. they will be discussing their plan at 1:30 this afternoon and

. >> tonight, students at san jose state are mourning the death -- death of a player on the water poloe was found dead at the bottom of the pool last week. >> it's very surreal. i was in -- i've been in shock for the past couple days. >> the -- at san jose state's aquatics center, sadness and shock over the death of ryan harryman. >>> i can kind of hear his laughter, you know? he was a very happy kid, very loving, easygoing. >> last tuesday night, harryman became unconscious during practice with the school's water polo club team. a university spokes woman said the sunnyvale native was at the bottom of the pool for minutes and rescued him. this weekend, his family took him off life support. >> there's no evidence to say -- say he hit his head. >> it's unclear what caused his death, students have taken to social media with the hashtag #forryan. >>> on the facebook page, the students signed a ball and say they're competing in memory. >>> besided water polo, he was also known for making people laugh with rap music videos on youtube. tribute videos are popping up from people who never met h

i'm in downtown san jose just blocks away from the san jose state university campus. and the city has identified this area as you can see as one of the hot spots for illegal dumping. it says some of the biggest offenders are people who rent apartments. >> so finding the people but how are you going to catch someone so directly like that? >> reporter: this san jose state student says it's not hard to find the trash around his home. slapping someone with a citation? >> i have never seen that happen to anyone ever. >> reporter: how are they going do it? >> the good news is technology can help even when we didn't have enough ears and eyes out there using cameras in hot spots. we're able to use data to identify where the dumping is happening most frequently. >> reporter: the mayor says he plans to put in more surveillance cameras to hopefully catch license plates. he also wants to put in more signs in hot spots. but needs the community's help to report these crimes. the city says it is also working on an app to help residents do so. in san jose, betty yu, kpix 5. >>> polic

san jose state university was surprised just how many of its student face that dilemma. that's why there are now 15 food cupboards in offices all over campus stocked with nonperishable food. it operates on the honor system so no one is embarrassed. at a new community garden, students who volunteer can take home fresh produce. last fall, supervisors were surprised by the results of the survey. >> one in three students at san jose state say it's sometimes or often true that they have to choose between food and living expenses. >> organizers say the students who use the food cupboards most tent to be single parents, lgbt parents and those from foster homes. >> if you ask the neighbors. it's going from bad to worse. traffic in south san jose, specifically at a new shopping center. today, a grand opening and many say a grand headache. was the opening of the bass pro shop, a popular shop. let's bring in scott budman, and scott, you're familiar with that part of town. what's the real story there? >> well, a lot of people are excited tonight is the opening of the bass pro shop,

there are now 15 food cupboards at san jose state. they're located in offices all over campus, stocked with non-perishable food. they can take home fresh and healthy produce. last fall, administrators were surprised at the results of a campus survey. >> and one in three students at san jose state actually say that at some times they have to choose between food and living expenses. >> the students who use the food cupboard tend to be single parents, lgbt students and those from foster homes. >>> two notable bay area families embroiled in racial tension. the owners of one of the oldest restaurants is facing charges of racism from their daughter. the daughter claims three was disowned for marrying a black man who was a football ledgend with the raiders. >> reporter: we're talking about the widow who owns the restaurant and she claims she was disowned when she married upshaw. this is causing an uproar on social media and to the customers i spoke with today. it's as san francisco as the cable cars, the tadich cafe. popular with locals and

for her dieing mother. >> melissa -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: when melissa graduated from san jose state, the one person she wanted to share it with was not there. >> i think i lied in the fantasy she would always be there sick, but there. and then one day she wasn't. >> reporter: graduating assuma cum laude was the beginning of her accomplishments and she went into a good job at a pr firm. her biggest achievement may have been during the first year of college when she became the caretaker for her mom. >> her memory was not the best toward the end and so just making sure she took her meds want she had to take them three times a day. >> i have every in seen anything like that or someone her age. she was 19 and she was literally doing the hospice care for her mother. >> reporter: this was the first time she was with her mom at the hospital. just a baby in her arms. they were poor and living month- to-month in downtown san jose. she was 14 when the doctorsel to her mom she didn't have long to live. it was an immune disorder. >> melissa's mom came to the church and she was really looking for
