[music] from the campus of san jose state university, welcome to this edition of equal time. i'm your host journalism school director bob rucker. gravitational waves and the big bang. gps tracking via satellites and high-powered telescopes. there are several discoveries astronomy has had in recent years that have had a tremendous impact on what we can detect. equal time's matthew dziak begins our coverage, about what is known in our universe. you're outside late one night, look up and you see the endless stars shimmering in the sky. our universe is a vast infinite space with much that is still left undiscovered. despite dedicated space centers. i think among the sciences, astronomy is one of the more beautiful sciences. i would say. just the pictures you can get from the telescope are just stunning. the colors and the shapes you can see and things out in space. but the magnitude of the things you're looking at are so big and far away and old. it's just a mind-boggling. one of the things they're studying is what makes the atmosphere of the sun so hot. because it gets up to a m

. >>> a student athlete at san jose state university is accused of sexually assaulting two female students at a party. >> the student has reportedly now left the country. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us from san jose state to talk about what happened and what they can do now. >> reporter: pam, one of the reasons this student athlete may have left is because he has been reportedly banned from campus. we're also being told he reportedly was an international student. the mercury news is reporting two females who attended san jose state came forward in september, telling officials a freshman water polo player raped them at an offcampus party over labor day weekend. that prompted police and the university to start an investigation. the college temporarily suspended the state from entering campus and practicing. he's maintained from the beginning he's innocent. according to the paper he's not been arrested and no charges have been filed yet. but the district attorney's office is reviewing this case. the university did not issue a crime alert, because campus police did not think he posed a dang

states. and the university officials say he apparently left the country. san josetate did not issue a crime alert because campus police who interviewed him didn't think he posed a danger. we're told that the alerts are issued when the suspect is unknown and at large and the community needs to take action immediately. but still, you know, back to you guys. this is just still very upsetting to some of the students. they just don't agree with how the university handled this. >> they wanted to be told sooner. no doubt. thank you, jeanine. >>> this comes a month after brock turner was released from jail. brock turner the former stanford swimmer was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a party. he was released from jail three months after serving a six- month sentence. it inspired change to california's laws against sexual assaults. one bill expands the legal definition of rape. another prohibits judges for giving probation for those convicted of assaulting an unconscious person. >>> the u.s. justice department will release its report on the san francisco police dep
