it was quiet at san jose state university, as well as here at the san francisco state university campus. how many students will actually be in the classroom at the csu's 2023 schools when spring semester begins is up in the air. the cfa, california faculty association, has called for a statewide teachers strike for all of next week after seven month of unsuccessful contract talks. the teamsters union, representing skilled trade employees, also plans to strike. san jose cfa chapter president says their union had no choice after the csu stepped to its initial offer of a 5% raise each year for 3 years. >> the csu bargaining team walked out of negotiations, and then the chancellor imposed a final best offer. we really have to strike at this point, because none of our negotiation asks were even addressed, really. >> reporter: today in a virtual press conference, the chancellor's office that the union's demand for a 12 sort raise was unreasonable and virtually impossible to meet. >> we would have to make severe cuts to programs. we would have to lay off employees. this would jeopardize our ed

joining us live now to discuss this is the chair and professor of meteorology at san jose state university, craig clemens. thank you so much for joining us, craig. thanks for having me. look, i know we have avalanches all the time. usually they're not reported on because usually they're not where people are and they're not deadly, certainly very rarely on maintained runs as ski resorts. s so how rare was this and why did this happen? what made it possible? >> well, it was very rare. i mean, in bound or ski resort uh- avalanche incidents are very rare and the conditions were just set up perfectly because we had strong winds, a lot of snow on a very weak layer and it was triggered. and so typically only resorts uh- have avalanche management and they go out and they trigger those avalanches ahead of time. and it's just not a perfect science yet. so sometimes uh- skiers trigger avalanches inbounds. >> i was going to say what could make that happen. right. presuming that palisade did everything that they normally do , the mitigation measures like the bombs that set off those many avalanches, is

it all down is caroline chen, a professor in the department of accounting and finance at san jose state universityshe is also a former irs attorney. professor, thank you so much for the time this year. taxpayers here in california and a number of other states are going to have access to a new irs program called direct file, which will allow people to file their returns directly with the irs for free. who qualifies for this new filing service? >> so the direct file is going to have an income threshold. so if you make 79, your adjusted gross income is $79,000 or less, then then you will be able to utilize this free program. >> and it's not going to be available for everyone, at least right now. so it's only in a few states. how is it going to be phased in over the coming months ? >> you know, that's actually a very good question. the irs has not actually been that forthcoming with that particular information, but i suspect that it will announce as new states. come on board, what those particular states are and how the taxpayers can go about access direct file to file their returns and talk a little
