san jose. a gas leak has prompted an evacuation of several homes on saint john street. that is near the san jose state university campus. police say a car crashed into a house at 447 saint john, causing a leak at the gas meter. fire crews are monitoring while pg&e works on the damaged line. the gas is not expected to be turned back on until about 12:30. there are two injuries but how they happened is still not known. >>> in san francisco, one man is dead after the shuttle bus that he was riding in collided with a big rig. anser hassan reports. >> reporter: traffic is back to normal. but in the morning it wasn't the case at octavia and oak streak. it was closed after a big rig and shuttle bus carrying 15 passengers collided leaving one man dead. this intersection is prone to accidents according to residents but nothing like what they saw this morning. >> this goes on all the time. to be a pedestrian in this area driving is dangerous. >> reporter: or even fatal as was the case this morning. a shuttle bus was carrying employees and possibly patients to san francisco general hospital. it crashed with this big rig ca

now, contributing to the problem is a new policy at san jose state university. freshman who live more than 30 miles from campus are required to live on campus. now, there isn't enough room for everyone. >> san jose state is very fortunate in that we'll be welcoming 4,000 freshmen in fall 2011 but these a huge increase from 2 ,700 in the year previous. that means we have a ton of demand for housing and not enough supply. >> the university is trying to rent rooms from business class hotels near vta light rail lines so students can commute to campus. >> doesn't sound so bad. >> stay at a hotel? maid service? >> yeah. >> room service. >> free breakfast in the morning. >>> why do you want to go to college? try tweeting your answer in 140 characters or less. >> the mba program at the university of iowa is asking candidates to tweet why they should be accepted. the most creative tweet gets a full ride of $37,000. >> if you were in an elevator with a ceo, you would want to say something really creative, very quickly. you don't have much time and that's what the tweet all

university is -- debro is here now to tell us about the steps the university is taking. >> reporter: it's not great news for the san joseniversity students. you just heard that the trustee voted to raise tuition. now this. on their website we're learning that san jose is telling kids that want to live on campus that they want to be on a 2008 list. typically, it would be first come, first served. but they say the demand is so great, they are working on the list and figuring out how they will place it people later on. now, i did speak to some students here who lived on campus in the past. they it told me that they felt it was highly -- highly unusual and unprecedented, it's not clear if it's an increase in the number of people aing mer a -- alooking it -- applying here if more people want to live on campus. again, we're waiting to hear from the spokesperson. all students who want to live on campus have to be on a wait list and when and where they get in will be here later this summer but of about school starts. it. >> thank you, kraig. >> it is 8:32. this morning, the district announced that deshawn marmon the college stu

trustees for both the university of california and the cal state systems voted to raise tuition, leaving many students concerned about how they're going to make ends meempt at san jose state university, the financial aid office is packed with students looking for help. the school's director of financial aid and scholarship says, though, there is hope. >> i would say call us. see the financial aid. call the people, call the office to find out what are your options, how do i do the research, what are the scholarships that are out there? how difficult is the financial aid? i know for a lot of people they look at it and say this is worse than filling out an income tax return. i'm not going to do it. you know, that's what we're here for, to help them through the process. to help them find that money. >> many students we talked with say they're looking into taking out more in loans and hoping to pick up more shifts at work to make up the difference in tuition. >>> a swarm of angry bees have people living in one southern california neighborhood ducking for cover. neighbors in southwest riverside county say the bees have built large nests, and that exterminators are killing

san jose state. which hotel -- the hyatt, motel 6? it makes a big difference. san jose state is dealing with a housing crunch, and 200 returning students are being forced off campus. the reason -- the universityccepted more students, more students agreed to come, and freshmen who live farther than 30 miles from the university must now live on campus. therein lies the crunch. so the university is negotiating a deal with a yet-to-be-named hotel. it will be within walking distance or so says the school. and a short light rail ride from campus. the distance seems to be the biggest concern among students and parents. >> the main concern is that students want to live on campus. they want to have the benefit of being close to class and to the library. so we're going to do our best to address that with the light rail -- with shuttle service in the evening. >> maybe it's the fairmont, you never know. once the university tells students which hotel they selected, they'll have five days to either agree or decline and get their money back. another problem, though, that might not be enough time to find alternative housing before the first day of school which is august 24. >>> san francisco has long been ho

san jose "mercury news." sources say the 50-year-old father allegedly shot his 22-year-old son before turning that gun on himself. the boy was a senior at the universityo, on leave after undergoing a blood and marrow transplant. before college he was a standout basketball player in san jose. so far deputies are not commenting on what could have led up to that shooting. >> san francisco police say they have the gun but not the person who allegedly removed it from the scene of an officer-involved shooting. this is a look at the gun fired during the shooting in the bay view district. investigators say ballistic tests reveal ken harding was killed with a bullet from his own gun. but that gun disappeared from the crime scene. a neighbor led officers to a pistol that was tested and the police department says it is harding's gun. remembering his life but struggling with his death. this morning an oakland mother is mourning the loss of her husband who was shot and killed while feeding the homeless. 29-year-old paris powell and his family were delivering food to the homeless early wednesday morning when someone in a turquoise van drove by and started shooting.

day of school and 200 returning students at san jose state still don't know where they're going to live. with the biggest freshman class in years, the university'ssing is at capacity and some of those upper classmen are now being forced to live in a hotel. the problem is, they still don't know which one. senior rachel cortez has fond memories of living on campus, memories that might be different for the 200 upper classmen being forced off campus in the fall. the university admitted 4,000 freshmen for the fall, its largest class in years. couple that with the rule requiring freshman living 30 miles from campus on campus and you get a housing squeeze. >> we acknowledge this is an unbelievably situation for our parents and our students. we can't apologize enough for that. we aring to the best we can to make them as comfortable in a hotel as they would be here. >> reporter: but not just any hotel, and there's the rub. the students must be housed separately from other hotel guests. they must have laundry and meeting facilities and free parking and it must be within walking distance or a short light rail ride. stance seems to be the biggest concern fo
