we finally can show you what the san lorenzo river looks like. earlier it was raining so hard it kept blowing out all the lights. so now you can see that the water is moving very swiftly. this river is at 8.5 feet. by 4:00 this afternoon, it's expected to reach 21.5 feet, which is considered a major flood stage. now yesterday swift water rescue crews had to brave that river to pull the body of the man from the water. we now know he's a 46-year-old man from ben loman. the coroner won't be able to say if he drowned until an autopsy is done later this week. this happened behind dick sergeant's home. >> we were standing here and were looking at two trees close together down there, and it appeared there was a body. and we called 911. >> reporter: so it will be critical for folks to stay away from this river and other local streams in the bay area because they are all going to rise very quickly. kari hall and the nbc bay area weather team are forecasting five to ten inches for the santa cruz mountains to push the san leandro river to major flood stage.

san lorenzo river will likely get flooding there late tomorrow into tuesday. alameda creek along niles canyon has had a number of issues. that will go two feet above flood stage late tomorrow into tuesday. coyote creek out around anderson. we see that rising to levels the highest since 1998. the napa river we think will get close to flood stage. maybe a half foot or so below that. the russian river at guerneville by mid-afternoon on tuesday we'll see some flooding. gusty winds focus in on the areas here in purple. wind speeds 6:00 tomorrow evening 40 to 50 miles per hour. 11:00 tomorrow night probably the windiest part of that storm. tuesday finally that storm moves on and we'll still deal with rain at times. cooler air coming on in. maybe some rain for next saturday but that's a gulf of alaska system that won't have the access to moisture like this one has. but in the meantime, the next 24 to 36 hours, that runoff will cause a lot of issues. >> if you don't have to go out, many kids don't have school, stay at home. >> the holiday falls tomorrow is a very good

south of san jose that is likely we'll see the biggest rise under the areas creeks and rivers, san lorenzo river expected to go to flood stage as we get into tuesday, guadalupe river right now close to flood stage, we'll have to watch that and see if it goes around san jose. and you will notice as we get into tuesday afternoon, it could crest into 11.4 feet, which will be the highest since about 1998 in february there, we'll watch that, steadily rising up towards eatonville, and another trouble spot expected to go to flood stage late tomorrow night. and even downtown napa, pretty close to flood stage, and gurnville, we expect about two feet over flood stage as we get into tuesday afternoon. winds also an issue, probably the strongest winds pick up as we go into midnight, you see the wind speeds 30 to 40 miles an hour, at that point the rain will have moved on but the strongest wind damage moving close to midnight. coming up we'll have a closer look at the seven-day forecast to let you know if we get a break from the storms coming up, back to you. >>> and still to come at 11:00, a fight at

. >> this is what the san lorenzo river looked like around 8:30 as the level keeps rising posing a threat to neighborhoods already large puddles are forming and the sandbags are out. the area affected the most is highway 17. this mudslide is one of the reasons why traffic has been completely blocked off at times, it has been getting cleaned up for nearly 2 weeks causing chp to close the northbound lanes as crews remove trees and boulders. >> reporter: the good news for drivers who use highway 17 is that there are no new landslides or mudslides to report, for now, from santa cruz county, jackie ward, kpix 5 the powerful surf continues to hammer bay area communities. from the pacific appear -- peer there were some monster waves. >> the big story passing at the coastline looking at 10, 15 and 20 foot waves they are washing all of the sand onto the street, you can see that here. this is footage from earlier this morning when someone waves got me pretty good pants and shoes all went, here is another sneaker wave when i was getting ready for a report. a police officer shut down pacifica this mo

in the san lorenzo river there was or a flood warning was dropped. very significant rainfall in a short amount of time a very powerful storm. we saw numerous watches and warnings go up today. a lot of the warnings have gone down, but there are still flood warnings out there. let's take a look at what's left of the bay area. this area right here, this is going to be the creek. and that warning will go down at 10:15. now the flood warning over here in alameda creek that will go away at 10:15 up here in san lorenzo river. that has been dropped. now this is the one we are watching out here in this area. this is a levy breach and this is right off of the san joaquin river. it uncovers a huge area. but this whole area in here basically is being allowed to take on a lot of water. the levy has been breached. there's a flood warning that will stay in effect in that area until tomorrow morning with scattered showers throughout the bay area right now. you'll see what happens, right? the flood warnings, now this levy breach. we still have scattered showers in th

also, the san lorenzo river at felton expected to reach a major flood stage by later today. so some of the issues we'll be watching as some of these waves of heavy rain comes in. looking at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen right now in the peninsula we will have a couple of days of a break mid-week, but right now it's not it. we will continue to see some more heavy downpours moving in, especially more concord as well as fairfield, seeing some rain moving in and also for the south bay, you can see on the camera what it looks like on the radar. here's what to expect for the rest of the day. heavy rain at times and localized flooding, and even at 7:00, 8:00, we still have some very heavy downpours. here we are right before lunch time and you'll want to make sure you stay inside today if you can because even this afternoon we'll have some more heavy rain and the potential for a few thunderstorms, something we also haven't seen for quite a while. tonight we start to see this activity becoming more scattered but still some times of rain going even through tomorro

that will continue on the san lorenzo river especially major flooding reached at big trees. that will continue until 3:30. let's go up the road and you can see the creek especially near niles boulevard. that's where we're seeing the most extensive flooding. it could flood down to the reservoir. this will last for a while. flooding around until 5:30. as we head up to the sonoma, you can see right there flood warning until 12:00. wefr had a lot of reports until 1:21 for several hours this morning. we've got this one for the laguna day santa rosa creek. all right. let me show you live doppler 7. the best radar returns are coming at you in the higher elevations on either side of the santa clara valley. you can see the north bay is getting a bit of a break now. flash flooding, if we have in is most likely going to be in the south where you see the heavier rain. it occurs quicker. that's why it's called flash flooding. flooding that takes longer for the water to meander it's way in and create the flooding, that could occur in any area. moderate and light rain. warm, dry sunshine.

this is the san lorenzo river, you can see the current is pretty strong, quite a bit of erosion, no flooding yet. now, since today is a holiday many families just came out to take a look at the river's water level. the found of felton has a rich history by having one of the oldest covered bridges in the country. in 1982 storms it damaged the history landmark, five years later it was restored. locals remember that storm, one man came out to have a look and he is willing to offer friends a place to stay if there's flooding. >> it kind of keeps me in tune with what, you know -- what people are encountering right now and stuff and i've got friends that live by the river and if it were up a lot higher than this i'd call them up and say, hey, do you need help or anything like that. >> reporter: farther upstream the current knocked down some trees and there's a lot of emotion, but the levels have not reached flood stage, at least here. but it's early and as you can see back out here live the rain is falling. this advisory is just a reminder for people to watch the levels and of course look for eros

san lorenzo river in santa cruz county is just one of many across the state rising to flood levels. dawne harman is the county's superintendent of public works. >> there's flooding here, there's trees down there, there's wires. >> reporter: nine of california's reservoirs are at average or above average levels for this time of year, the highest total since 2011. repairs continue at the oroville dam, where a damaged spillway prompted the evacuation of 188,000 people a week ago. south of san francisco, lake anderson reservoir is overflowing with water crashing over the top of the dam. >> i've lived here most of my life, and i have never seen the levels of water being so high. >> reporter: as fast and as powerfully as this water is pouring out of the anderson reservoir, more water is flowing enter the reservoir up above, and anthony, this wet weather is expected to continue at least through tomorrow. >> mason: john blackstone. a large area of the high pressure has kept those western storms from traveling east, so much of america is getting a preview of spring. for the weekend, the east
