san louis is 250 years old this year. they asked me to do it. and i did this for the newspaper.it is not like i bravely took a sabbatical and eight ramen noodles hoping the someone would love my book. i did this for the newspaper. it was my assignment. for eight or nine months i did the research, wrote the stories. other people in the photo department and i found the photos. i am proud of my riding and love my words. what really makes this book of the nearly 200 photographs. newspaper photo files are as good as you will get in terms of a local record. the first dispatch files here are good until about the late 1920's. each one of the articles is newspaper feature-length. each article has whatever photographer we would find to go with it. and then at the end of the book have got about 26 pages of an essay-type chronology. one of the pieces i did was about the origin of the old folks on. a lot of people remember that old song. he comes bursting into the apartment one night. if she says he has a night and she has a 32 and uses it. somebody in all st. louis thought up the song. we h

so what is so san francisco about this bridge is it is the first one in st. louis, it is now the oldest one on the mississippi. it is built in a way that no one had built a bridge before. it was build from the tubular steel arches. at this time in world history, there is nobody building anything out of reliably form lated steel. he indicated this needs to be carbon steel and be durable and hold up to the pressures and be strong you have to endure the traffic that was flowing over as well as hold itself up. it has to hold itself own weight and the weight of traffic. so he did this with the tubular steel bridges and everyone else is building suspense bridges at the time. he built it on the stone pilings pilings, which is quite deep. it is over 100 feet deep. nobody had ever built a piling or a footing below grade that far, below the bottom of the river. the bridge was built and opened on july 4, 1874 with general william sherman who was an important military officer and a resident of st. louis driving the final spike. one of the things they did on opening day was to

san francisco is the first city to provide a college savings lent for children when -- account for children when they start college. it's in the name of each child. at washington university in st. louis they found sids with a saving -- kids with a savings accounts are more likely to attend college. the research inspired the city to start the k2c programme. >> what made a difference was having an. it must have said to the kids it may be something you are meant to do. here is the concrete evidence of that, why else would there be an account that says college and has your name on it. >> reporter: the city spent $660,000 on the programme. private donations bring in another half a million. this boy has an account. his parents put $50 a month. if a family saves consistently for six months a $100 bonus was deposited by the city. this man was surprised after two years. >> i assumed it was $2806789 when i looked it was $800. >> reporter: the treasurer says agencies show across the country 3% of kids grow up with a college saving account. k2 c numbers are higher. >> we are at a savings rate that is four times higher than the national average. >> for many of these families, this is the first sa
