abc's david kerley is in cabo san lucas. >> reporter: the sun is going down. but hurricane jimena has a bit of a punch. the eye of the storm is about 100 miles offshore and moving north. what you're seeing here is the storm surge. this is all the water being pushed ashore by the hurricane. the good news is we were expecting 10-foot to 20-foot waves. we're in the 10-foot range. there was a problem with a lot of rain early. but there hasn't been any in the past several hours. that is a relief to those in the shantytowns. rain started coming down. streets became raging rivers. and the military and police are trying to move people out. they got a lot of people evacuated. material things are not worth losing your life, this marine tells this woman. like 10,000 others, she makes her home in a dry creek bed. but it's anything but dry in this hurricane. if this storm does pass, as it has been, those people should be able to return to their homes on so, it looks like the damage expected from hurricane jimena may be less than forecasters and officials predicted. we'll k

>> reporter: well, i'll tell you, it was a hurricane that wasn't here in cabo san lucas. when we first started watching hurricane jimena it looked like a category 4. it has weakened tremendously as you mentioned, making landfall right now as we speak 150 miles north of where i'm standing in cabo san lucas. look at this resort area. it's empty. there's not a soul out, the winds aren't blowing, the rain, well, it came a little bit yesterday but no real downpours that lasted any length of time. the folks here dodged a bullet but the people in the resorts here tourists and what not, they had to go into hurricane shelters last night to escape what they thought could have been a powerful storm. we were even told to evacuate our rooms and go to what is called a convention center at this resort which is a certified hurricane shelter. the biggest concern, though, jacqui, were people living in these shantytowns that really don't have any type of shelter that could withstand that type of wind. there's about 10,000 of them and over 1,000 of them did make it to a shelter last night. t

cabo san lucas can take that.torm moves up the coast it will get to areas that really are not so well built. not the concrete block type of places that you would expect in a developed tourist area. 135-mile-per-hour winds. right now 145. it will get into colder water and suck in drier air. a very mountainous area. there are dry washes that wash away and people scatter away when the rain comes down. we're talking about a little bit of rain for the fires up here in l.a. i've seen a couple showers pop up on radar. they're never there especially in august or september. they're never there of t. this is moisture coming up from that hurricane. it would be nice if the track would not do such a right-hand turn into arizona and maybe drive itself up the west coast. right now that's not the forecast. >> atlantic and caribbean? what's going on. >> here it is right here. i always have something extra for you on this wall here. look at that. they are flying into it today. i'm very surprised that it doesn't already have a numbe

the eye is expected to pass 75 miles west of cabo san lucas this morning. surf could be 20 feet high. here's viviana hurtado. >> reporter: in mexico's people are preparing for hurricane jimena. the powerful winds and large swells are expected to decimate this area. this fisherman says we're taking the boats out of the water in case the hurricane hits hard. but it's the poorly built home where it will have the most devastating impact. authorities plan to evacuate at least 10,000 families from potential flood zones and set up shelter. we're trying to think ahead and fill up the tank, this woman says, because the hurricane that's coming, which has us sort of worried because they're saying it's a cagory 4. tourists are leaving los cabos. an international finance seminar was moved to new york city, dealing an economic blow before the hurricane hit. >> in galveston, texas, residents are cleaning up from a powerful tornado. three people were hurt. downed power lines left 4,000 customers temporarily in the dark. power has been restored. today showers and thundersto

it looks like it will go just to the west of cabo san lucas.gets to the california current, the cooler water, and then it should weaken throughout the next 24 hours. all of the spaghetti lines are where computers are telling us it will head. notice none of these things are showing a direct hit on cabo san lucas. some of the more unpopulated areas to the north are still in jeopardy. this means a weaker storm effectively. here is the wind field. the orange shows you the hurricane approaching. those are the tropical storm force winds. from late tonight to early tomorrow morning, cabo san lucas will get strong winds, but not hurricane-force winds. they expect landfall as a cat 3 or cat 4, somewhere just to the west side. as you mention, it's a more sparsely populated area. this could have been a devastating blow to the resorts. as of now it's starting to look better. >> are the firefighters going to get rain from jimena in california? >> none of the rain or cloud or moisture will go up to california. >>> new developments in the case of the girl abd

now let's go 400 miles south of here go to some video of cabo san lucas and what that storm has done so far.cbcbcbcb they've seen tropical storm force winds, flash flooding and keep in mind the eye is still 100 miles to the west. but cabo on the south side of the california baja peninsula are on the strong side of that storm. now, as we take a look and transition to a loop of hurricane jimena it's a category two storm moving at about 105 miles per hour. and again, it's moving to the northwest at about 13 miles per hour. the eye not expected to make landfall quite yet, but should make so on the california baja mexico coast as a low or weak category two storm. still plenty dangerous, though. now, let's transition to the national maps as well and talk about what may happen that could bring some moisture to southern california but that's still a big question mark. elsewhere as we journey along to the east coast, melbourne, florida getting pounded as much as the state did. record-setting rains in melbourne, 4.2 inches yesterday, more today, south dakota oklahoma, and the midwest to the mi
