>> reporter: well, i'll tell you, it was a hurricane that wasn't here in cabo san lucas. when we first started watching hurricane jimena it looked like a category 4. it has weakened tremendously as you mentioned, making landfall right now as we speak 150 miles north of where i'm standing in cabo san lucas. look at this resort area. it's empty. there's not a soul out, the winds aren't blowing, the rain, well, it came a little bit yesterday but no real downpours that lasted any length of time. the folks here dodged a bullet but the people in the resorts here tourists and what not, they had to go into hurricane shelters last night to escape what they thought could have been a powerful storm. we were even told to evacuate our rooms and go to what is called a convention center at this resort which is a certified hurricane shelter. the biggest concern, though, jacqui, were people living in these shantytowns that really don't have any type of shelter that could withstand that type of wind. there's about 10,000 of them and over 1,000 of them did make it to a shelter last night. t

it looks like it will go just to the west of cabo san lucas.gets to the california current, the cooler water, and then it should weaken throughout the next 24 hours. all of the spaghetti lines are where computers are telling us it will head. notice none of these things are showing a direct hit on cabo san lucas. some of the more unpopulated areas to the north are still in jeopardy. this means a weaker storm effectively. here is the wind field. the orange shows you the hurricane approaching. those are the tropical storm force winds. from late tonight to early tomorrow morning, cabo san lucas will get strong winds, but not hurricane-force winds. they expect landfall as a cat 3 or cat 4, somewhere just to the west side. as you mention, it's a more sparsely populated area. this could have been a devastating blow to the resorts. as of now it's starting to look better. >> are the firefighters going to get rain from jimena in california? >> none of the rain or cloud or moisture will go up to california. >>> new developments in the case of the girl abd

now let's go 400 miles south of here go to some video of cabo san lucas and what that storm has done so far.cbcbcbcb they've seen tropical storm force winds, flash flooding and keep in mind the eye is still 100 miles to the west. but cabo on the south side of the california baja peninsula are on the strong side of that storm. now, as we take a look and transition to a loop of hurricane jimena it's a category two storm moving at about 105 miles per hour. and again, it's moving to the northwest at about 13 miles per hour. the eye not expected to make landfall quite yet, but should make so on the california baja mexico coast as a low or weak category two storm. still plenty dangerous, though. now, let's transition to the national maps as well and talk about what may happen that could bring some moisture to southern california but that's still a big question mark. elsewhere as we journey along to the east coast, melbourne, florida getting pounded as much as the state did. record-setting rains in melbourne, 4.2 inches yesterday, more today, south dakota oklahoma, and the midwest to the mi
