(pam) turning now to chief meteorologist lawrence karnow.(ken) lawrence these fires are being fueled by hot and dry conditions...is there any relief in sight? lawrence karnow: highs soared into the 90s low 100s in the valleys with much cooler weather in the 50s and 60s at the coast. there are more showers and thunderstorms over the sierra but it's not as active as today. it was incredibly hot in the valleys with highs well into the 100s. on the satellite you can see the high pressure ridge over the desert southwest. it's bringing the hot desert temperatures back into california and the bay area. it will remain hot again tomorrow away from the coast with the 90s and low 100s. it should start to cool slightly on friday and over the weekend. more fog and cooler weather is expectd for the beginning of aug

from gilroy to san jose this commute looks all right driving in through san martin and morgan hill. a couple of incidents have not caused slow traffic. we're keeping an eye on them. and there's roadwork not causing major slow traffic. we found an accident inside the caldicott tunnel in case anyone asks you. it's in caldicott tunnel number one. which is that? it's the farthest right from oakland to orinda. just so you know. it's eastbound 24 inside the tunnel. and no one is injured but someone is standing outside the vehicle. and that may be slowing traffic. and eastbound 80, treasure island, that ramp is closed so you can't get off at treasure island. you have to go all the way to the toll plaza and turn around. you have to bypass treasure island, flip a u-turn and come out and get off this way if you're going to treasure island. a little bit of a pain and we don't know how long it's going to be there. >> the new one would be bore four. >> exactly. >> frank was spot on. >>> we have some very hot conditions for some and not that bad for others. san francisco can't get over 65 degrees

driving up to san martin and gilroy and morgan hill, you can see traffic is moving well into the siliconroblems. and a live picture of 280 in san jose looks good. if you're driving to the bay bridge toll plaza, we don't have a big crowd yet. sometimes by 5:30 the metering lights are on. so far, so good as you drive towards san francisco with clear skies on the bridge. let's bring steve in. >>> we do have clear skies and a little bit of fog on the san mateo coast near san agree gore owe -- gregorio. yesterday phoenix had record rain. almost a half inch of rain for the date. and that's a lot of rain in the desert. and massive dust storms. they calm them haboobs. really impressive. a lot of the thunderstorm activity making it to southern california. san joaquin valley and down to las vegas. this is preventing it from moving up here. you need the flow aloft to be more southeast. and this is taking it southwest. unless you're san jose. by thursday or friday, some of that could work in. this is the gfs so proceed with caution on this projection. but i buy into it for the tahoe area. and that's

the church fire near san martin has destroyed one mobile home and 16 vehicles and damaged two other homes. the grass fire started late wednesday afternoon. governor jerry brown declared a state of emergency in marry poe sa county where the ferguson fire is burning near yosemite. yesterday's weather conditions were favorable that allowed the fire crews to widen containment lines. this fire has burned more than 44,000 acres and its 27% contained. most of yosemite is closed to visitors. in southern california a wildfire off highway 74 in river side county has burned 7500 acres and only 5% contained. it started wednesday and it keeps growing. about 3,000 people in the mountain community were told to evacuate. authorities arrested a 32-year old man suspected of starting the fire. >>> pg&e is reporting a quarterly loss stemming from legal fees from the deadly fires last october. the utility says the total liability could be double that amount. the company's president said governor's brown proposal to ease the standards of liability for future fires is insufficient. >>> also new this morning, a

look at the south bay commute if you're checking out the maps here, 101 coming up from gilroy and san martinslowing around the morgan hill area. no specific problems there. there's an issue on 101 north. chp is describing it as a large pool of water in the far right lane so maybe that's why people are taking it slow in the area. in the south bay, if you take vta, there's a bus bridge between the convention center stations. so you will be able to take vta through that area but be aware trains are going slowly at five miles per hour and this is all because of a crash that happened yesterday. taking a look at 280, caltrain and southbound direction things are good, no specific problems as you pass the coliseum. when you make your way to the toll plaza, definitely different than what we saw in this picture half an hour ago. the metering lights are on, a 15-minute delay to get on the span. you could use the cash lanes or car pooling always a fast option to get right on to the span. tame now is 5:32 back to the desk. >>> we continue to watch the rescue of trapped soccer players in thailand. these a
