bob redell is live at crystal springs in san mateo county which is getting emergency supplies of waterd morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. in order to ensure that the city of san francisco has a clean drinking water supply, the public utilities commission has begun diverting water from the hetch hetchy reservoir to two other reservoirs here in the bay area, the crystal springs reservoir right hee behind me in san mateo county, the cal var ras reservoir being the other. this is just a precaution in case the rim firp would contaminate the hetch hetchy which supplies 85% of the drinking water for the city of san francisco. while ash has fallen into that reservoir, it's yet to impact the water quality. the puc has measured how many particulate matter is in the water. right now if you look at the scale, it's at a .2 which is well below 5.0. that's the threshold for water quality. for the ash to become a problem, it would have to sink 300 feet. that's the depth at which the city draws its supply from the hetch hetchy. let's say the ash were to get that low and affect water quality, the
