cities in san mateo county has some of the highest vaccination rates in the bay area, and according to county data, more than 95% of the population 12 and over in san mateo, burlingame, woodside, and menlo park have received at least one dose, but there are a handful of spots along the coast that are lagging behind. kpix 5's max darrow joins us live and el granada to explain how the county is trying to change that. >> reporter: the county has a goal of vaccinating 80% of every community within san mateo county. while there are some coastal cities that are already well above that 80% marker, there are still a few that are lagging behind. along its coastline, san mateo county health leaders are on a mission to improve vaccination rates. >> folks who live on the coast are fairly independent. they don't live in these very congested communities. >> reporter: county data shows around 66% of people in el granada have received at least one dose so far. just up highway wind in my speech, about 53% of people have received a dose. that is much lower than most cities in san mateo county, which boa

joining us now to talk about it is the san mateo county deputy health officer. thank you for joining us. now that the pfizer booster's are going out, how is it going in san mateo county? are you seeing a huge demand? do we have the infrastructure? any issues, challenges, long lines? >> fortunately, the infrastructure and supply is much better right now than it was six to nine months ago. pharmacies and primary care providers, community clinics, and we will still have our county vaccination clinic. they will not be the mad dash and low supply from back in february and april. there is now plenty of supply and you will be able to get it. kristen: if you are in one of those eligible groups. for folks 65 and up in long-term care situations, folks in high-risk occupations where they have a lot of exposure. remind me, i am blanking out on the last one. underlying medical conditions. if you are in one of those groups, would you go to a county website, california website, call your doctor, pharmacist? >> all of those options are available. i think the one thing to clarify

the same goes for the 22 votes enters the route san mateo county. the registrar's office says that they have already received 60% of the ballots from registered voters, and of those 97% were sent in via mail. if you have not voted yet, you can still do so at the polls until 8:00 p.m. voters i spoke with told me they chose to turn in their ballot in person, because they wanted the assurance that it would be counted correctly. >> because i'm an american, and i believe that it is the safest way to vote. >> san mateo county voters traditionally have been very engaged. you will see our voter turnout are high. as you can compare with the rest of the state right now, we are 10 to 15 points ahead of the state return. it really depends on the engagement of the voter. >> reporter: if you cannot get to the polls by 8:00 p.m., you can still mail in your ballot, as long as it is postmarked by today, and also the registrar says the safety and security of your vote is their highest priority, and they do have the finest technology to ensure it. >>> governor newsom

kristen: you are in san mateo county where i think the vaccination rate for those over 12 is 93%. is the eligible population. lots of support in york county for that. are you allowing for religious or medical exemptions? >> medical exemptions, yes. religious, i haven't seen any written religious exemption that is valid. if they have when they can show me, i would respond. but, i do not know of any that are actually saying you shouldn't get a vaccine. so that is interesting. so, patients of record, if they have an emergency i will see them. kristen: what if somebody has had covid? if they have had covid, will you still require them to show vaccine card? >> yes. kristen: how long will you have this in place? >> until the vaccine is -- until the pandemic is over or everyone is vaccinated. the virologists i talked to says soon -- you are already seeing movie theaters, bars, you are going to see businesses requiring this. kristen: more and more seem to be and you are one of them. dr. wong, thank you for sharing with us what you are doing. we w kristen: thank you for joining us. today w

but it expanded greatly today in some other bay area counties, namely san francisco, santa clara and san matteo. ktvu greg liggins went to san mateo county to see how things are going. burlingame city hall is one of nearly a dozen sites in san mateo county, where people can now cast their ballots in person in the gubernatorial recall election, the county has sent mail in ballots to all of its 440,000 registered voters, but some are choosing to exercise their right the old fashioned way. rather than mail it in. i did want to do it in person, but i may do that in the future because i did verify my signature matched today, so i may probably do the melon. i feel that's very safe. also, there is always this excitement about voting in person that has been a tradition for so many years and i just wanted to be to help in preserving the traditional way of voting. another motive trust a familiar refrain heard by some casting ballots at the county elections headquarters in san mateo. here at least i can rely on the salmon county elections, uh, group division to properly. counted and there's records here, you know you stick it in the mail. wh

and in san mateo county, nearly 94% we spoke with a grocery store owner in daly city. he tells us they require their employees to be vaccinated, and they are encouraging their customers to do the same. when you see you know your friends, your family trusted people in your community who have all been vaccinated. it kind of builds a sense of safety supervisors in san mateo county say they expect to have a 100% vaccination rate in the next couple of months. well flies, there is another step closer to being allowed to offer booster shots of its covid vaccine. today at the fda signed off on administering booster shots to people over 65 those at high risk from the coronavirus. the cdc still needs to give its approval. its advisory committee began reviewing fighters booster shot data today. the u. s regulators want to do is make the boosters initially available for an older population who can probably derive more benefit from the shots because they are at higher risk from covid. the cdc panel is set to discuss the issue again tomorrow and later vote on who should receive that
