"today in the bay"'s bob redell is live to explain how the program works. >> reporter: good morning, kris county to give officers in law enforcement an opportunity to de-escalate calls when somebody is in a mental health crisis, to give responders a trip to the hospital for a hold. dispatchers will deploy a clinician along with a police officer if it seems the 911 call could be related to a mental health crisis. once the officer deems the area safe, the clinician can provide services. the community wellness and crisis response pilot program is launching in the city of san mateo, as i mentioned, along with daly city and south san francisco and redwood. they will spend $1.5 million over the two years in the pilot program. other cities like san josÉ and san francisco, they have also added mental health response units and this past friday, palo alto started something similar as well. reporting live

shawn chitnis shows us how san mateo county is clearing up the floodwater. >> reporter: the situation is improving in san mateo county at spots like this along highway 1, where we saw much of this straight flooded in the morning, and even some damage to property nearby. firefighters are still concerned about what could happen between now and the weekend with more rain in the forecast. >> talking to some of the long- term coast side residence, they haven't seen that flooding since 1982. >> reporter: a mess first thing in the morning for residents near california avenue and highway 1, flooding destroying a fence, closing down the center section, and blocking a convenience store. >> it was unexpected. it was a lot more rain than usual. >> reporter: hours later, crews were still trying to clear the scene while the homeowner evaluated the damage. >> i don't see as much water as this morning. >> reporter: cal fire did not have to respond to residents displaced by the flooding, but runoff and into drainage ditches and culverts, and it did back into some homes. >> it's great to see rain at al

thank you sandia today four of the biggest cities in san mateo county began a new pilot program. it partners trained mental health professionals with police officers to respond to behavioral health crisis calls abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains how the program will benefit the community. in order to grow sometimes it takes self-reflection with 14 years of law enforcement experience, san mateo county supervisor, don horley aimed to find a solution for how police can best respond to mental health calls. my goal always was to solve situations that have safe way that provides for public safety and everybody gets to go home at night. that's a you know, both the mentally ill person as well as the deputy sheriff's or police officers with not every case turning out that way he asked what can we do differently? as of today daily city south san francisco, san mateo and redwood city police departments will send officers and train clinicians to mental health calls. this is community centered wellness this is community focused wellness. and then freeing up our police officers in addi
