san quentin's infamous death row is facing its own death sentence. last year the governor announced that it would transform the prison into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center. now that transformation is under way. today we got a rare look inside death row. even though the state put a moratorium on executions back in 2019, prisoners who were sentenced to death are still being housed there. but by the end of this summer, all of those inmates will be relocated to other prisons across the state. joining us now is nbc's jodi hernandez, who was inside san quentin today. jodi, nice to see you. what are conditions like inside death row? >> i'll tell you, it's really eerie to go inside death row. i've been to san quentin several times before through the years, including for a metallica concert. but this is the first time i've actually been inside the east block. you can see the images there. and, you know, we had pretty much free access to the whole bottom floor. you can see how these cells are stacked up on one another like sardines. i mean these cells

we brought over 40 elected das to san quentin for the situation. now we are inviting the police department. our formerly incarcerated group born out of this programming asked for the opportunity to work on a project where we could bring the men in blue on the outside to come speak to the men on blue inside to start the healing dialogue around how the criminal justice system specifically in san francisco impacts the community. i was attracted to the role. there was a component of equity that was part of this process. the equity community here in san francisco is a community that i had already worked with. before i took steps to visit cannabis businesses i thought it was important my team have a chance to go inside and speak to men who had been impacted. that conversation needed to happen so we know how we are making an impact with the work that we are doing. the da's office as we were leading up to the legalization of marijuana in the state we started having conversations on the policy team what that could look like. the district attorney was really

life in prison without the possibility of parole and then in 2022, he was moved off death row at san quentin. we were back in court after that happened as he and his defense team then pushed her a new trial based upon an allegation of juror misconduct. after a series of hearings in 2022, a judge ultimately denied him relief and did not grant him a new trial. fast-forward almost two years later now in 2024 and we are back in a courtroom as he now makes this bid to try to prove his innocence. janie peterson, his sister-in-law, was present at the hearing today. she has been a fierce advocate, saying that her brother-in-law is innocent and has maintained that since the beginning of this case, 20 years ago. she did not speak to media, however, but this will be a lengthy process and we will be here as it unfolds. >> you remember 20 years ago. i don't think there is a person around the country or here in the bay area, especially, that does not remember the scott peterson case. think about everything that has been written about it. no doubt it will continue to capture a lot of attention. >>> turning
