here we are going into san rafael. check out this footage from the drama yesterday that began around 11 am with big chunks of concrete, some as big as a football that fell from the upper deck to the lower deck damaging one car, a white mercedes. that was in the morning and caltrans shutdown all lanes eastbound while they looked into the problem. by the afternoon more chunks of concrete started falling so they shut down the bridge completely through the evening commute. 80,000 people use the bridge every day and it was a draft -- rough drive home taking highway 37 or south across the bay bridge, sitting in traffic for hours. they vetemporary repair, big metal plates. by 8 pm all of the lanes were back open. the stranded drivers had no choice but to wait it out. >> it's not good at all, but it's better than getting hit in the head by concrete >> it's only been a half hour but it's really crazy. i am hours from where i'm supposed to be. i work up here, and i'm just trying to get home. >> reporter: caltrans has put in an e

here is live okay of the richmond san rafael bridge. we are hoping that -- i saying it is closed, and traffic is backed up at least a mile. now, westbound traffic was fine earlier, but you can see because they will close it again and there is no estimated time of reopening, it will have a huge impact on the bay area because a lot of folks will be heading to the bay bridge as a backup and eastbound is also already slow and heavy for the normal commute. and highway 37 has just been a mess. it is crawling at 2 miles to 5 miles per hour eastbound approaching sears point. it does pick up westbound slow on 37 leaving american canyon. so again, richmond san rafael bridge is now closed, highway 37 heavy at well. so the bay bridge is slow eastbound as a possible alternate. and because this closure will be in place for a while, if you are thinking about taking mass transit, b.a.r.t. would be a great alternate or consider the san francisco bay ferry. we'll keep you posted because this might even affect tomorrow morning's commute. >> that's going t

we know the traffic is bad around the richmond-san rafael bridge. and that caused gridlock on city streets. traffic was crawling all over san francisco. they had to shut down the cable car lines. all lines closed temporarily due to the gridlock. we'll let you know when it reopens. to give you an idea how bad it is on city streets, it's taking almost an hour on battery to head towards the lower deck of the bay bridge, and it's taking over an hour on the embarcadero just to get to the freeway. also, eastbound 37 has been a mess, but the drive time has actually improved. it's now about two hours. at one point it was over three hours. and again, this drive normally takes 10 minutes without traffic. eastbound 580 also heavy, over an hour as you make your way from 101 to the richmond-san rafael bridge. and of course delays expected for the transbay service on ac transit heading to the bay bridge. bart and san francisco bay ferry great alternates. we don't know when it's going to reopen. we're hoping it will not look like this tomorrow morning. >> okay, th

this has been a day of stops and starts here on the richmond/san rafael bridge. a ghost town, that is what the richmond-san rafael bridge look like for the better part of the day after football sized chunks of concrete came down in the traffic lanes on the lower deck. the normally bustling toll plaza at the east independent of the span shut down completely. >> around 10:35, we received a 911 call from a driver stating that as this he weey were going eastbound, a large chuchk cnlge concrete fell and hit their car. they sustained major damage, however they did not stop because they were on the way to the airport. >> reporter: chp released these photos of the actual pieces of concrete and of a section of the bridge that appears to be damaged. as shown from sky 7, caltrans initially closed only the eastbound lanes creating a huge traffic jam in marin county prompting some to attempt to turn around even back up on the freeway. a short time later, a decision was made to close the westbound lanes as well. and cars were diverted off the freeway. >> she has a doctor's app

. >>> the coverage of the richmond-san rafael bridge, the richmond-san rafael bridge is open but it wasafter falling chunks of concrete hit a vehicle. we are live at the richmond bridge toll plaza. >> reporter: it is a different story compared to yesterday afternoon where no one was crossing the richmond-san rafael bridge but traffic is moving through without problems. caltrans says this bridge is structurally sound. it is just wear-and-tear. this bridge is 60 years old and concrete erase and that is what happened yesterday. concrete fell on a car. the car was badly damaged but the driver had to catch a flight and kept going. chp responded and found concrete that had fallen on the side. the largest the size of a football. they closed the bridge until temporary repairs could be made. that took about nine hours yesterday until close to 8:00 tonight, the richmond-san rafael bridge was closed and created a traffic nightmare. >> they will say they will be there in 2:20. we are going to danville. >> there is wear and tear on up bridge with heavy loads. sometimes whether comes into it as well.
