that breaking news interstate 3580 closed in both directions in san rafael after a u.p.s. ntin prison. san quentin just to the left of this picture. anthony slaughter is in our traffic center. anthony, what is the latest? >> well unfortunately this highway will be closed at least until about noon. the westbound side lanes, that's from chp. they are diverting traffic around it so you can still use the highway. it's just that section of highway will be closed until noon. the westbound side lanes diverted to main street. you can see some cars getting through. eastbound side lanes that's what you're looking at here folks are being diverted on san quentin boulevard. overall this will be a slow commute for the next hour or so. eastbound lanes they will be open in the next hour. but you'll notice traffic is still stop and go all the way on westbound lanes towards the toll plaza, a really slow go there. even through fremont a slew of accidents on the 880 southbound side keeping things slow through newark and union city. san jose 101 not bad but 280 this morning is where we see the

san rafael bridge. >> that's right. this truck that caught fire almost two hours ago driving westbound. it was a u.p.s.he bridge. just after the bridge, it ran into trouble, hit the center divider and burst into flames. the driver was not seriously hurt. but 580 is shut down near san quentin. they are taking traffic off the freeway and putting it back on via one of the exit ramps there. you might imagine what this is do doing to the -- this is doing to the morning compute. this is a terrible commute. it stretches all the way across the span and over to the richmond-san rafael bridge toll plaza into richmond. this traffic stretches for miles trying to get past the scene. you won't get through. if you don't want to take an alternative leave extra time or you could use highway 37 or the bay bridge. a lot of people are using the bay bridge right now. we go to the macarthur maze and it's backed up out around the macarthur maze. 20, 25-minute delay. the rest of the east bay and the south bay commute look pretty good. 580 is lighter than usual from livermore to hayward. a little bit of slowing 880 hayward. an

the eastbound lanes of 580 near the richmond san rafael bridge are open again at this hour but at 5:30 this morning, this is what it looked like. a u.p.s. truck crashed and caught fire in the westbound direction near san quentin, all westbound lanes remain closed right now. it's expected to be another two hours before they reopen. the good news is no one was hurt, but infront trailer of the u.p.s. truck and its contents of packages are all a total loss. >> officers in the east bay are on the lookout this morning for a man who crashed his car and then ran off leaving a woman and a child trapped in the wreck. this is what's left of a black sedan driven by a man who tried to escape officers this morning in hayward. the chp says the officer decided to help -- to stop him, rather for an expired plate after they say someone threw a cigarette out of the car at 880 and tennyson. the car pulled over but as officers walked to the car, the driver sped off and crashed just a few blocks down. the driver left behind a woman in her 20s and a child under 10 years old. strapped into a booster seat. here you see the car. they were removed from that car

u.p.s. truck goes up in flames destroying hundreds of packages and causing a traffic nightmare this morning in the north bay. the big rig assist traveling westbound on 580 in san rafael when it hit the median sliding along the center divide. diesel fuel was spilled one of the two trailers caught fire. it all happens about 5:30 a.m. and this is what it looks like nearly 12 hours later. chopper 5 shows the crews are still working to clear away debris and repair the freeway. and boy, there's still a backup. lanes aren't going to re-open until at least 6 p.m. and that's a look at the richmond/san rafael bridge heading west coming out of richmond and there is the toll plaza there. it's been a domino effect all day. earlier this morning, the westbound 580 highway looked like a parking lot leading to the richmond/san rafael bridge. drivers inched along many of them had to pull off the highway. we spoke with some who actually were running out of gas. >> i have been out here for a long time and i need to get to a restroom. >> we were trying to go to work over there but i mean it's really, really packed right now and i mean what's the point of going through here? >> the big ri
