kris sanchez is following the story and joins us live from east palo alto. what's the latest? >> reporter: this happened at a very busy time of this neighborhood. just as parents and families were walking their children to school. a 7 year ol' girl was hit while she was in the cross walk a few steps ahead of her mother and her two sisters. she was a 7-year-old and second grader at green oaks academy in east palo alto. it was serious impact and the child died at that time scene. i talked with witnesses who were just too upset to go on camera but who told me that the woman behind the wheel was driving too fast. east palo alto police are investigating whether that's true but we do know that they did not ticket that driver before she was released. neighbors here also say that traffic was especially heavy here this morning because police rerouted drivers away from that earlier deadly crash about a block away on bay road and university. we will tell you more about that crash in just a few moments. for now, east palo alto police are working to see if there was a connection between th
