i am kris sanchez. marcus washington has the day off. kari hall is tracking chilly temperatures and when that rain is set to return. >> it has been so cold across the bay area, and now we are waking up to more clouds, acting as the blanket that will keep f degrees. right now all of the rain still well to the north of us but we can see the clouds reaching in. we will see off and on rain. take a look at what you are feeling as you are stepping out the door this morning. it's 38 degrees in morgan hill. we are also looking at low to mid-40s in parts of the north bay. for walnut creek, it's a clear start and 43 degrees. we will see the clouds linger through today with only peeks of sunshine. we will watch out for a chance of spotty showers, and temperatures reach into the mid-50s. i will have more on the rain coming up in a few minutes. >>> this morning covid-19 cases are surging once again across the country, as you might have imagined. an nbc news tally finds the u.s. topped 50 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic. >> the u.s.

i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm marcus washington. glad to be back with you guys today. good to be back. here we go, monday morning. good to see you, kari and mike. let's start with our forecast, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. >> good monday morning. now, we've been tracking the fire conditions just to our south, and so some of that smoke will be coming into the bay area today and having an impact on our air quality, especially in the east bay it will be unhealthy for people who are sensitive to the wildfire smoke and all the particulate matter in the air. we're also seeing fog in parts of the north bay. visibility is clear elsewhere as you're getting ready to head out the door and we'll continue to watch that. we'll be a little cooler than we've seen recently, so a bit of an early week cooldown for parts of the bay area. we'll be talking about the air quality and what's ahead as our workweek progresses in a few minutes. mike, heading out the door, how is it looking for early-morning commuters? >> the view quality, no

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live to explain what the teachers are asking for and the families that may soon feel the impact. kris? >> reporter: right. when teachers don't show up to work, certainly families have to figure out what to do with the kids who are not headed to school. and we've certainly heard these demands before, we heard them from oakland teachers. they managed to work things out with their district. now west contra costa teachers say they may be willing to walk off the job. here is what their union, the united teachers of richmond are demanding, they want high-quality masks for everybody on campus. they also want weekly testing for everyone, and in classrooms where there have been positive cases, they want twice-weekly testing. earlier this month the district did close for two days for deep cleaning of their campuses, but now weeks later, the majority of the district's 1,500 teachers, nurses and staff say they are willing to walk off the job. while the union and district have been negotiating, today is the final deadline. the east bay times obtained a letter fr
