i will take this opportunity to go through the roots of our sanctuary city. it was established in 1989 and at that time, our city had heard numerous stories about how people were fleeing to america and trying to find their new lives because of persecution, war and all the other things that had pushed a lot of people to come here and find their opportunities here. during that time, we felt did very important that we allowed and welcome these new families to come here and feel safe and as they became embedded in our neighborhoods, we discovered that if we were to not only continue that invitation, but also as a sanctuary city, could involve them in everything from the way we conduct our business to having adequate services, to having help programs accessible, to having police and public safety programs accessible to them to take the fear out of being undocumented or unaccustomed to the culture. to have more open and welcoming neighbors along with a realistic viewpoint that we could not prevent a lot of it from happening because we have an unstable immigration po

we get attacked for the sanctuary city. the id cards in san francisco and connecticut are very, very good. this is an issue that most elected do not want to deal with. in sacramento, it is not a user- friendly situation. people acknowledged that something has to be done, but then they run away from the. commissions such as this, cities such as san francisco, and basically the reality. sometimes i make a joke about immigration. we are here already. we are not going to go away. if you're worried that we have h1n1, then give us health care. i went to washington and ask what is going to happen with health care reform? you have to think of ways. you have to give us more funding for community clinics so people will not be worried about getting deported and not be worried about getting health care. and not be worried about somehow being identified as a criminal. we have a lot of responsibility to all our brothers and sisters who made this country great. we cannot be intimidated. we are a productive people. i walked on the picket l

supervisor kim: onto concur with my colleagues around the sanctuary city ordinance. i want to thank the supervisors have worked on this and i gets important -- and know that our mayor has a long history of working on civil-rights and immigrants rights issues and my hope you would commit to a full implementation of this policy. he is working to expand due process protection for families here in the u.s. and i hope we will continue to the full implementation. i want to give a quick update -- the mayor referred to it on the pyre of that happened in district 6 last wednesday night. it was a for alarm fire that started around 5:30 in the evening. unfortunately, the fire snaked its way from the first floor of a way to the third floor and through the roof. the building is now and habitable. there are now approximately 48 units in the building and 143 people have been displaced. we were able to work quickly to open up the recreation center to be a temporary shelter for wednesday night and thursday night. we were able to get a number of residents and 32 individuals housing at
