tara, the board of supervisors is making a decision on the very controversial sanctuary city policy and one san francisco supervisor in particular is introducing a measure that would drastically reduce the powers of the mayor? >> reporter: that's right.  first off, the sanctuary city policy, this reared its made last year when kate steinle was shot ald killed last year. her alleged killer is an illegal immigrant from mexico. so the city's policy of not sharing the immigration status of inmates with federal officials came into question. now, last night the supervisors approved changes clarify when local law enforcement officials can notify immigration officials that an undocumented ultimatum will be released from custody. the new guidelines say that can happen if a suspect is charged with a violent crime or is convict of a serious felony. the sheriff was pushing for greater discretion. now mayor ed lee must sign the ordinance for it to become law. if it had been in effect last year it wouldn't have applied to the suspect because his previous fely convictions weren't considered serious.
