here's abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: in new mexico, 1,200 firefighters are holding the line againsthat won't stop. >> it's really rugged terrain in there. real steep, rocky. >> reporter: but in utah the firefight turned deadly when this tanker sent to battle the blaze crashed into the forest. todd thompkins and ronnie chambless, both veteran tanker pilots, were killed. within hours of that crash, this tanker plane made a forced belly landing in reno, nevada, after the landing gear failed. no one was hurt. both incidents are under investigation, but tonight there is renewed concern about air tanker safety. many of these planes are aviation antiques. the average age, 50 years old. >> these are essentially world war ii large air tankers, so we get some of these planes that are getting to the point where they belong to museums rather than being in the sky. >> reporter: in 2006, the forest service had 44 large tankers on call. now, only nine. safety concerns grounded dozens of planes after a series of deadly crashes. >> he just crashed! >> reporter: the agency admits that modernizing the

abc's clayton sandell has that story. >> reporter: it's an out of control monster. new mexico's biggest fire ever. destroying a dozen homes. torching more than 350 square miles, an area bigger than dallas, texas. flames driven by hot, dry wind. >> we are struggling and praying that everything turns out okay. >> reporter: it may be burning in an isolated area, but already this year, wildfires have blackened more than 700,000 acres. ten states are facing above normal chances for fires. >> in the west, it's not a question of if but when you will have a wildfire. >> reporter: with a potentially dangerous wildfire season on the way, there is renewed concern of a serious shortage of air tankers, which are critical for fighting a blaze from above. critics worry the nation's tanker fleet is shrinking. in 2006, the national forest service had 44 on call. today, only 11, and they are getting older. the ntsb found cracks in the wings of this 1950s era tanker that broke apart in california. >> he just crashed! >> reporter: three people on board were killed. >> some of the plane

here's clayton sandell. >> reporter: new mexico's biggest wildfire on record grew another 14,000 acres since saturday. now up to 355 square miles. but 18 days after lightning sparked this blaze, there is progress. starting tomorrow evacuated residents can go home although smoke will still make for unhealthy breathing. across the west fires are being driven by a triple punch of drought, winds and hot temperatures. but it's not just the weather. for most of the last century, the strategy for fighting forest fires was to put them out quickly, a policy that experts say backfired. >> because we've suppressed fire in the west, we now have old stands of timber, and those are potentially catastrophic wildfires. >> reporter: now, fires that aren't threatening homes or towns are surrounded, allowed to burn out. >> fire can help to rejuvenate the natural ecosystem. >> reporter: this part of new mexico has burned before, and that's helping slow this blaze but firefighters say it will be weeks before they get the upper hand, clayton sandell, denver. >>> i want to bring in meteorologist ginger zee.

here's abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: it took a jury just five hours to acquit monica chavez of negligent homicide. >> not guilty. >> reporter: for something that ended five lives in a split-second. driving with her two kids in february last year, doctors believe chavez had a seizure. she floored the gas pedal, careening at 100 miles per hour, smashing down on the stollheimer family pickup. all five were killed. prosecutors argued chavez should have known not to drive, especially after previous seizure-like episodes, including one that sent her to a hospital in 2006. but chavez prosecutors say ignored orders to see a neurologist. her attorney says she followed up with her family doctor. >> she was told that she may think -- she was told they couldn't find anything wrong with her. they did tested. they ran tests. they told her she was fine. >> reporter: even if chavez had been officially diagnosed with seizures six years ago, colorado law does not require doctors to tell the department of motor vehicles. only six states do. >> it's wrong. this verdict was wrong. >> the stollsteim
