archaeologist william sanders. the economy of any given human group, any culture, is a powerful factor that affects the rest of that culture -- the social organization, the political institutions, even the ideology, the religion of a people. from my perspective, the economy of a group is one of the most powerful determinants of human behavior. keach: to archaeologists, all economies fall somewhere on a spectrum from simple to complex. in a simple economy, people grow or gather all the food they eat. they make all the things they use. households in such simple economies are almost completely self-sufficient. at the other end of the spectrum are highly complex economies in which people specialize in one particular job, like these shoe salesmen in morocco. specialization means people are no longer self-sufficient, but depend on each other. the shoe salesmen are dependent on the shoemakers, and the shoemakers are dependent on the tanners, and so on. this dependence on others makes society in general more complex, so sp

a leader of the excavations in copan since 1980 is archaeologist william sanders. an objective of archaeological research is to try to reconstruct the whole culture from top to bottom, from the economy and technology up to the religion. the problem is that what we find in the field as data is primarily information on technology, on the material culture. you find buildings and pot shards and stone tools and things like that. so how do you move from that data to the organization of society and then to their religion and these other aspects of culture ? and there is only one way to do that. and that is to go to living populations, living cultures that are being studied by ethnographers, by our colleagues in cultural anthropology, and use them as analogies. keach: in the 1970s, anthropologists documented a society called the kawelka in the highlan of papua new guinea. the kawelka society numbers about 1,000. they could be either a tribe or a chiefdom, because the population limits defining social types are not fixed. here in the highlands, people raise sweet potatoes a

kerry sanders is at a walmart in sanford, florida. what are we expecting there, kerry? >> reporter: well, union organizers say they will protest what they say are low wages and they say they have set a deadline for labor day for walmart to rehire employees or give employees who were disciplined back what they had lost after that protest that was on black friday. now, according to walmart, nobody was fired from their jobs because they failed to show up during that previous protest. they say that's against their own policies. so there's a little bit of a dispute there but butt tomorrow line as you know, this is a growing momentum not just for walmart but in other low-paying jobs where they say why can't we get paid more where the economy supports a better living wage. >> walmart says this is not about most of the workers. most of the workers are happy. walmart says, they will continue to serve our customers in over 4600 locations and handful of union orchestrated media stunts, made up of primarily union members and activists don't represent the views of the vast majority.
