biden is sitting way ahead of sanders in polling even though sanders is double digits as well and we'retween them and that gap is growing. what is sanders' strategy to try to turn things around? >> reporter: well, what you see here, fred, is the core of the democratic argument, who has the best set of skills to go up against donald trump because clearly the thing that democratic voters are most concerned about is putting forward the canned dhat can beat donald trump and bernie sanders comes from a much different perspective. joe biden is saying i'm establishment, tried and true. i was with barack obama. that's what voters want. they want a level comfort whereas bernie sanders is arguing there's a level anger within the democratic party, frustrated by two years of donald trump and that he has the set of issues that inspire that group of voters to really get motivated to be part of the electoral process, particularly voters of color, a very diverse subset of voters that he thinks will come together to beat donald trump. we don't know the answer to which of these strategies is better, but

but sanders is focusing especially here in vermont on his own record. he is presenting himself as someone who has been consistently progressive and who the party has essentially come to him. he said four years when i talked about medicare for all, people said it was radical. when i talked about legalizing marijuana, they said it was c radical, a $15 minimum wage was radical. and now they are core to the democratic party. so he is trying to separate himself on the issues to which he has been about consistent and he is going after prud esident trump on one particular angle, and that is his opposition to foreign wars. he points out that he was somebody who led the opposition to the war in iraq when he was in the house. and even now, he is leading the opposition it a potential war in iran. take a listen. >> right now this minute, i am doing everything that i can working by the way with some honest conservatives in the senate to prevent donald trump and john bolton from taking us into a war in iran, a war which would be in my view much more destructive. if y

that's just one of the intriguing stories from sanders' past.at was actually reported during his last presidential run. that is now popping up again, like his conservative voting record on guns and his honeymoon in the soviet union. >> you know what i would love to think? sometime in the future, i would like to see families, your mothers, your dads and maybe yourselves go to the soviet union and learn about that country and people from there come to here. >> but unlike the last time, voters are more than likely to put sanders' past record under a microscope. at this point in 2015, sanders trailed hillary clinton by 42 points. this time he's considered one of the front runners. and there are many more candidates to choose from with the frontrunners target on his back, the sanders baggage from his past could weigh a bit heavily. just a reminder, his message may be similar, but 2020 is going to be very different for bernie sanders than it was in 2016 because of that target. we'll be back with more on that and more 2020 after the break. r♪ (announce
