i talked to an aide that's close to senator sanders last night, and he made it clear that sanders' numberne priority is to get the checks increased from $600 to 2,000. it is remarkable about the political benefit that the democrats have here by forcing these republicans, particularly these two senators in georgia, hoping to be reelected, to come out and say where they stand, they support those $2,000 checks and as a side note to all of this, using the national defense authorization act is kind of the tool to force mitch mcconnell to bring this to the floor, also something that is easy for bernie sanders to do, because he's often critical of the pentagon and defense spending in general. so, you know, there's no doubt that sanders is much more concerned about getting that aid in the hands of every day americans. but he's not, you know, ignoring the fact that there's enormous political benefit here. not only in the short-term, by forcing those gop senators, not only to take a stand on the $2,000 checks, but also physically having to be here in washington as opposed to georgia and the closing

how do you see this sanders threat playing out? >> yeah, you're right.s is very arcane, and senator sanders is using a tool in his toolbox to force this vote, which is very consistent with his image as sort of the lead progressive in the senate, one of the best-known progressives, probably, in the country, to get that extra money into the pockets of americans. why not get the senators on the record on this? i mean, yes, as we discussed with loeffler and perdue, it's an uncomfortable position for them. do they want to stand with the president, ask for more money, make this bill much bigger and more expensive, or do they want to stick with their leadership and the vote that they've already cast around just giving constituents $600? bernie sanders is probably doing the right thing to get that money, that question on the floor to the senate. we've heard from joe biden yesterday. he told our geoff bennett that he supports the $2,000 direct payment. so, sanders is standing up for something that biden seems to be very comfortable with and getting all senators o

senator sanders spent last summer literally trying to defund our military. not my words, mr. president that the title of the piece he published defund the pentagon, the liberal case. the liberal case. our colleague authored an amendment to strip 10% of funding from our service members and decimate our defense budget. the russians aren't cutting military funding. china isn't cutting funding. but last summer senator sanders and fellow democrats, including the democratic leader voted to make america unilaterally disarmed and cut ours. the left took a break from trying to defund the police to try to defund our armed forces. the amendment went down in a landslide. but now our colleague from vermont is again putting political stunts before the needs of our men and women in uniform. our colleague says he will slow down in vital bill unless he gets to muscle through another stand alone proposal from speaker pelosi that would add roughly half a trillion dollars to the national debt. which does not align with what president trump has suggested which has no realistic path to quickly pas
