let's get abc 7's meteorologist sandhya patel here to tell us what's going on. sandhya? >> it's a dangerous storm, obviously proven to be deadly. we see heavy rain pushing into north carolina, pushing into south carolina. it made landfall at wrightsville beach. tornado watch boxes were up tonight. winds at 70 miles an hour. it's tracking west at 3, but it's really crawling. 2:00 p.m., a tropical storm. south carolina tomorrow becoming a depression. weakening, making that nearly turn toward the northeast. here's the take iowa waichl rainfall, 20 to 25 inches. storm surge up to 12 feet. flood willing continue for days. it will be catastrophic, damaging winds and the possibility of tornadoes. already a foot and a half of rain has fallen across parts of north carolina and they're still counting. larry? >> thank you. >>> a nonprofit is helping with displaced people. leslie brinkley is live at medshare with more. leslie? >> reporter: that's right. medshare is set to gear up with hurricane florence. last year they were dealing with seven disasters in seven weeks including hurri

sandhya patel has more. what does it look like now? >> it is a tropical storm now and heavy bands of rain continue to move through north carolina and south carolina. so far over 16 inches of rain has fallen in north carolina, gusts over 100 miles an hour, and the storm surge has been up to 10 feet above average. tornado watch boxes until 11:00 tonight as the storm interacts with land. tornadoes are possible. right now winds at 70 miles an hour. it's moving at a snail's pace, 3 miles an hour, which is why the drenching rains and storm surge will continue, weakening over the weekend, making that turn through the northeast as we head into next week. the storm surge is expected to remain high, up to 12 feet above average. the rain totals, isolated spots up to 40 inches of rain. 16 inches for some parts so far and still counting. a couple more feet of rain is expected. ama and larry? >> thank you. they're trying to gather emergency and hygiene supplies to help those displaced in the carolinas. >> abc's leslie has more. >> if you remember th
