meteorologist sandhya patel is here. sandhya? >> yeah.and dan and ama, one of the big things with the wildfires down south is the air quality. so let's take a look at the wildfire smoke from the last visible satellite imagery available. and you can see that they're still dealing with a lot of smoky conditions. my sister in law actually has family down there. and while they're okay, she said it's pretty thick smoke there. air quality alert remains in effect until 5 p.m. tomorrow. here's a look at the current air quality. most areas are in the good to moderate range, but there are places near acton poor for sensitive groups, this is going to continue to fluctuate as those fires burn. fortunately, our conditions are mainly good here locally as we check out our high temperatures for today. the national weather service did have a typo earlier. if you were with us during the 5:00 show, i had reported santa rosa at 74. they made a correction. it was actually 64 degrees there. there was a record in san jose at 74 degrees today, breaking the previ

meteorologist sandhya patel is back with the forecast. sandhya?> yeah, we got the much needed rain. it was welcome here. dan and julian. and now we'll get a chance for the weekend to dry out. but tonight, we still have a couple more showers in the forecast. let me show you some live views. they're absolutely gorgeous. from our different tower cameras around the bay area. and then we will talk about what's happening. so earlier this morning we had a cold front come through. it brought us some widespread rain for the morning commute and even into the early afternoon. but that has moved on. we still have a little bit of energy off the coastline that is going to come through later tonight, bringing the potential for some spotty showers. rainfall today. ben loman picking up a half an inch. you will notice san jose 1100 1800, san francisco 2/10 in oakland, 2200 san rafael and 4000/600 in santa rosa, concord, brentwood. you only picked up a few hundredths of an inch. looking at live doppler seven right now, it is pretty quiet here locally. but as we take

sandhya for the latest. sandhya. >> yeah. and ama and dan, let's take a look at the high temperatures for today first. and then we'll talk about southern california. san jose just came in with a record 74 degrees. the previous record was 70 back in 1962. it was a cooler day across the region, but still pretty mild. 74 degrees at the santa rosa location downtown, 65, in the city, richmond, concord, redwood city 67, half moon bay, 64 degrees. all right. the wildfire smoke down in southern california still getting picked up on the visible satellite picture. although the plume is not as extensive as days pass, they still have an air quality alert. they are dealing with some air quality issues. right now. it is moderate in yellow there yesterday. do you remember they had unhealthy and poor for sensitive groups. that's still going to be the case going into the weekend. high pressure is still in control of our weather. the high and the low have separated a bit which allowed the winds to ease. and that is of course,

meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast. sandhya? >> yeah. and dan and j.r, let's take a look at a live picture, because we do have precipitation coming our way. this is from zephyr cove, where they're just seeing some high clouds right now. but that scene is going to change statewide, the sierra snowpack is at 108% of average, while the northern sierra is doing great at 161. central and southern sierra are still behind where they should be for this time of year. we certainly can use the rain. you can see here santa rosa, 209% of average, san francisco 121. but the other cities are all lagging behind. and these are rainfall percentage of average since october 1st. we do have rain moving into northern california. it will get down here by tomorrow morning. right now we're just seeing high clouds on live doppler seven. but here's a look at the storm. it is developing in the pacific. and while all the moisture is aimed at the pacific northwest and northern california, that changes come tomorrow. so your temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. here's

sandhya. yeah, absolutely. >> and julian and dan, let's take a look at first the snow, because it is just coming down. this is from zephyr cove. it really looks like winter at this hour. this is why it's not a good idea to head up there, even though it's beautiful to look at from the camera perspective. not great to drive until 10 p.m. tonight we have a winter storm warning in effect. we're looking at 8 to 12in above 5500ft, even higher amounts for the peaks with those gusts to 50 miles an hour. driving is going to be hazardous. as a matter of fact, they are requiring chains, as they just mentioned at the top of the show on the roads leading up to the mountains, and there are some spinouts in the area because of the reduced visibility. looking at live doppler seven, you will notice that there are thunderstorms near redding. we have snow falling in the sierra and still some wet weather going along the northern california coast. locally here it is quieted down. partly cloudy skies across the reg

dan. >> okay, thanks very much, sandhya. and as the wildfire burns through los angeles, there is growing concern back here at home, particularly around areas like the oakland hills where people know all too well about the devastating wildfire can bring. city leaders say what makes oakland so dangerous is that it is highly populated with few roads in and out. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has a look at ways to protect people and property. >> a drive through the narrow roads of the oakland hills shows how difficult it could be to evacuate during a natural disaster. >> in this neighborhood, i think that they are taking it seriously and that they are doing everything they can. >> kazemaini was neighborhood burned in the 91 oakland hills fire, an experience that has many aware of the constant wildfire threat. he says the city is doing a lot like annual home inspections by the oakland fire department, but others say much more needs to be done because the streets are narrow. >> sometimes there's only one way out. they would

let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel for what our week looks like. sandhya. >> yeah. we're going to be seeing some changes this week as well. first, we're going to have to deal with the chill and then we'll talk about rain. that is definitely needed here. a live view. clear skies as we look from our pier 39 camera at alcatraz. this is why we're in for another cold night. it was cold and frosty this morning. the low temperatures napa down to 30. livermore dropped to 26 degrees. mid 30s oakland airport, san jose. it is going to be cold once again. well, cold enough for snow in the mountains in southern california. they got soaked over the weekend, over an inch of rain in many areas for the wettest spots, and right now just a few showers are trailing behind that system. here in the bay area. we've got the clear conditions temperatures right now in the 50s and the 60s. bundle up tonight we have a frost advisory. 1 to 9 a.m. covers virtually all of the bay area. temperatures will drop in the coldest spots down to freezing, which means we will see frost once again. so six,

sandhya thanks very much. now let me show you this map from cal fire, which shows you the active wildfires in southern california. the newest one we've talked about here is the auto fire near oxnard. you can see that there up in the corner. the biggest fire, again, is, of course, the palisades fire burning near malibu. that's in this area here now, up to 14% containment. it has scorched more than 23,000 acres. just a devastating fire. all right, let's move out to the other, other active wildfire in southern california, which is still on the cal fire's map is the hurst fire. and we'll show you the hurst fire burning. here's the eaton fire. forgive me. good start. let me start with the eaton fire. containment from that is up to 33% now, which is not bad. so they've had some improvement. more than 14,000 acres burned in the eaton fire. evacuations are still in effect, but today, more people were allowed to return home to see what was left. with any luck, their homes were still standing. again, the other active wi

so let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel for the latest. sandhya. >> yeah.nd dan, we're seeing explosive growth in this fire in just a matter of hours. and i want to show you a live picture once again from that, that hughes fire burning near castaic and l.a. county. over 9000 acres now. and this fire is going to continue to have some erratic behavior. so take a look as to why relative humidity is 7%. that's bone dry. you have northeasterly winds gusting to 35 miles an hour. that santa ana wind is a very drying wind as it comes down the mountains and moves towards the valleys, you get heating due to compression and drying out of the air mass even more. unfortunately, our air mass. well, let's just say it was cold and frosty this morning. our coldest locations fairfield napa airport and also basically 20 upper 20, excuse me, 30 degrees in livermore, 37 in san jose. we do have another frost advisory going up from 11 p.m. tonight until 9 a.m. thursday. not quite as cold, but we certainly will have parts of the bay area and the north and east bay seeing some fros

sandhya. yeah. >> dan, you know what i'm going to show you is what that storm is doing up in the mountains. this is our prettiest picture from zephyr cove. you are seeing the snowflakes coming down, and the snow has just been piling up. looking at live doppler seven, you will notice that the sierra has been seeing that snow steadily increasing throughout the day. there have been thunderstorms in northern california. we've seen our share of rain. the first tornado of the season of this year at least, was reported in northern california. we'll talk about that later on. but the next system is sending us big waves. we've already seen those waves increasing. here's a live view from our santa cruz camera. watch out because it is dangerous. beach conditions. high surf advisory until 3 a.m. sunday. current wave heights anywhere between four feet at monterey bay to 12ft point. arena breakers 18 to 25ft means it's going to be dangerous to swim or surf. we have a beach. hazards for the northern monterey

sandhya. yeah, and you know what? >> ama and dan, we have a changing forecast.t look behind me right now. that was some wild video, by the way. golden gate bridge camera is socked in as the fog has returned. exactly as we had expected. you can see it here on live doppler seven, right near the coastline. taking a look at visibility, it has dropped to below that quarter mile. it's down to zero right now in half moon bay, so be careful tomorrow morning for the commute. you'll need that extra time. let me show you those temperatures right now. 39 degrees in santa rosa, 37 in danville. these are some of our coldest spots. you will notice temperatures in the 40s around the bay and the coast. this is what's setting the changes in motion. an area of low pressure as it's approaching. it is pushing the marine layer towards the bay area. it certainly is going to help those firefighters. the winds have backed off down in southern california. look at this really much lighter. five at brown's canyon, six at malibu. this will help them to continue to gain ground on those fires

meteorologist sandhya patel is back with that sandhya. >> yeah, dan and i didn't fl like january, that'sake a look at the high temperatures for today. 74 degrees in san jose, 73, redwood city 70, ukiah. cloverdale. 60s elsewhere. i mean, close to 70. in oakland, concord, san francisco. above average for this time of year. looking at those temperatures right now, many of you still mild in the 50s and 60s. and then when we widen the picture, that arctic blast of air making it noticeable that we're standing out like la. much warmer compared to the rest of the country. 32 in atlanta right now. one more day of the chill down there and then they should be recovering. live doppler seven showing you quiet weather right now. clouds will increase. tomorrow is cooler. upper 50s to the upper 60s. and then here comes the trough from the north that will bring much needed rain to southern california and snow to the mountains. for us, we have a chance of seeing some spotty showers between saturday and early sunday, but the concern down south is mudslides. and then next thursday we have another opportuni

sandhya. >> yeah. dan, that smoke has been moving all the way up towards the santa cruz area. i do want to show you a live picture right now from that moss landing power plant fire. although it doesn't look that intense, it has been putting out a lot of smoke. this was from earlier tonight and you can see it. fortunately, the winds haven't been strong, but the wind direction transporting it from moss landing towards the santa cruz area. i've been getting reports from people there. right now it is 42 degrees, the relative humidity as high as 95%. winds are light out of the northeast, so there's been a little bit of a switch gusting to three miles an hour right now. as we take a look at the air quality from air. now the official reporting station good to moderate, but i am looking at purple air and they are showing some sensors indicating unhealthy air quality in that region to poor. so be aware of it. keep your windows and doors closed and stay inside to avoid exposure, especially if you're particularly sensitive. the winds will remain light as you look at the hourly forecast g
