first we start with maria molina for the latest on sandy's path. where is sandy now? >> it is more than 300 miles away from the new york city areas to the south and southeast. we have an update from the national hurricane center. hurricane center moves through the storm and found out sandy has further intensified. the pressure dropped more and incredibly low out across the latitudes. maximum sustained winds stronger as well at 85 miles per hour. sandy is forecast to continue to strengthen and becoming post tropical system or extra tropical system that is not important. what's important is sandy is a powerful storm system and will be producing widespread impact across the northeast. land fall expected as we head into monday night and central sections of new york city. that puts it on the northern side of a storm system you will be seeing the on score flow 11 feet off of long island and new york harbor. the flooding is forecast not just for new york city but since sandy is a large storm areas across new england will be seeing beach erosion and coastal flooding. heavy ra

to clean up debris left by sandy. high winds and rain-soaked earth made the ground too unstable for many large trees. megan mcgrath has a look at how neighbors are dealing with sandy in northwest d.c. >> the clean-up began as soon as the high winds died down. on 16th street in northwest, public works crews made quick work of several trees that had toppled across the road. as the sun came up, people ventured out to take a look for themselves. this large tree completely blocked cathedral avenue. >> it was wild. because all these trees were being whipped over the road. and i was out walking a dog. and the dog was not happy to be there. and i was not happy to be there. and the gusts would come through that were very, very strong and made me nervous that a tree would pop down. >> traffic this morning was light. many people stayed home from work. for those who did go to the office, there were some detours. rock creek looked more like a fierce river. also high, the potomac river. but concerns about major flooding did not com

all of this power, all of this damage in sandy are still well offshore. what makes sandy special?his time of year, most tropical storms and hurricanes move east out to sea. sandy is traveling north and will turn west so its effects will be felt over a large land area. and this storm is monster size. clouds stretching over 2,000 miles, tropical force winds more than 1,000 miles. as sandy makes its way up the eastern seaboard it's colliding with an arctic cold front from the west. add in the jet stream and sandy is a superstorm. >> this storm is going to be destructive, historic and unfortunately, life-threatening. >> and we've got to talk about wind and rain from this storm, first. those are first the likely things that will cause the most damage early on in this storm. a quick look at its windfield. we'll show you is this not a coastal system. watch this thing come onshore and it spreads winds all the way in, look at that, chicago, you're getting winds. down south, atlanta you'll be feeling winds from the storm. take a look at the rainfall. again, this is not just the coastal stor

sandy also took out part of atlantic city's famed boardwalk. >>> coastal communities rocked by sandy are waking up to a big mess this morning, including heavy flooding in areas. erica gonzalez is getting a firsthand look at the impact sandy had in rehoboth beach, delaware. this is where we began our journey along the boardwalk that so many are accustomed to seeing in rehoboth. it's pretty quiet. you've got some of the debris, some of the rocks that have washed ashore from the impact that we've seen. at its peak in rehoboth beach, we had waves that were 20 to 25 feet high. he had impacts up to 50 miles an hour with these gusts. this morning what we're feeling is it's significantly colder. so a big, big difference for anybody who's been in any type of hurricane coverage, you're not used to wearing gloves or long johns or ear mufs when doing hurricane coverage. you've got eight inches of rain that have fallen in the city of rehoboth. you've got at least 300 people in 1 of 3 shelters in rehoboth. and the mandatory no driving ban in place from the delaware governor that is still in effect
