polo sandoval is following the story. the suspect is dead. what else do we know about what happened here? >> reporter: the nypd basically summarizing this morning's horrific scene of which in which they found multiple victims, a house on fire and who they described as a madman on a rampage and on a mission. what that mission was is still unclear, though police did say that all of those affected are family. so there's early indication here that this could have been a family dispute gone horribly wrong. here is what we know about what transpired. it was just after 5:00 in the morning when a young person reached out to 911 dispatchers telling police her cousin was killing her family. two officers initially arrived and encountered a knife-wielding suspect. initially, approached the officers. the officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries before police officers shot and killed the suspect identified as 38-year-old courtney morgan from the bronx. they found an 11-year-old girl who was dead at the scene and the house was on fire. once they wer

joining me is polo sandoval in queens, which is george's district. what's next for his seat?> reporter: you could see the former congressman's name on his office. that is obviously going to change here very soon. in terms of the process in place to allow the people to turn the page on what's been a very complicated chapter, the process itself is really quite simple. governor hochul now has ten days to announce a special election that's supposed to take place 70 or 80 days after that announcement is made. unlike your typical election, it would not be a primary that would decide the candidates. it would be party leaders at the county level that would bring forth a list of candidates that would eventually end up on the ballot. the pool is significant, everything from a retired police detectives to a war veteran. eventually constituents would elect the next person to represent this critical district. santos is one of four republicans that flipped districts that were traditionally blue. republican ves have a lot ridinn this process. we've heard them time and time again expressing

cnn's polo sandoval reports. >> reporter: the university of pennsylvania will begin final exams this week under new leadership after controversy resulted in the resignation of two university officials. among them, liz magill, the now former university president. she along with the heads of harvard and mit have been heavily criticized since last week for failing to recognize that calling for jewish genocide is a direct violation of the universities' codes of conduct. here on the campus, we have seen reaction and heard reaction from students, including one in particular, who is also the vice president of the jewish heritage program, who told cnn over the weekend that he felt that this was a step towards accountability for the university administration. separately, we also heard over the weekend from the governor of pennsylvania, who spoke at a local synagogue joining both jewish and non-jewish community leaders, strongly condemning violence against all faiths. this is what he said. >> in whatever form, whether anti-semitism, islamaphobia, racism, homophobia, it has no place here in pen

cnn's palo sandoval is following this story for us. we know the suspect is dead. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: the nypd is summarizing this morning's scene as one they found multiple victims, a house on fire and what police described as a madman on a rampage and on a mission. in terms of what that mission may have been, it's still unclear. there's early indication that this may have been a family dispute that took a horrifying and bloody turn. after the nypd arrived on scene at that home in queens, police say they were encountered by the suspect, 38-year-old courtney gordon with a knife, who at attacked these officers. that's when police shot and killed him. they identified an 11-year-old little girl at the scene who had been kid, and the house was on fire. so they had to wait for the fire department to extinguish the flames before investigators went into that home where that call originated. that's when they discovered three additional victims, including a 12-year-old boy, a 44-year-old female and man in his 30s. a woman survived in her 60s, currently i

p polo sandoval has more. >> reporter: an attorney representing some of the sandy hook families says this is the first time this conspiracy theorist offers up how he believes he can be held accountable for the lies he spread, including calling the 2012 shooting at sandy hook a hoax. let's break down a few key points of this lengthy proposal. sandy lhook families would sette for at least $5.5 million a year over the next decade. the families could also have the possibility of more depending on jones' income. they would also receive a percentage of any income jones makes. in exchange, families would give up legal claims against jones. it was just last month that families had a proposal of that own. instead of that 5.5 million a year, they were asking for 8.5 million a year, plus ownership stake in jones' company, also a considerable amount of any income that he generates. if he would meet them in terms of that proposal, families suggesting he would be restored full ownership of his company after a decade. ultimately it will be a judge who will decide what the terms for that settlement

cnn's polo sandoval has the story. >> authorities in maine had released this dashcam video to cnn.is very hard to see anything on the video, but in it you can clearly hear a phone conversation that takes place between a local sheriffs deputy and army reserve captain jeremy reimer. as you recall, it was before that deadly shooting in october that the family of suspect robert card actually reached out to authorities saying that his mental health had declined and that he still had access to firearms. it was a short time after that his unit reached out to authorities requesting this welfare check. that's what this video from september actually captures. the deputy was following up on those concerns after that deputy was not able to make contact with card. that's when he is able to get on the phone with captain reimer, who explains what he believes was going to be done with any kind of weapons that card had access to. here's how that conversation played out. >> in terms of all the weapons, this is kinda how it went down as far as i know. there was no real court order to take his weapons
