sandra magnus and leland melvin. both are examples of different ways you can become an astronaut. you might say that sandra took the more "traditional" path. >> i grew up in a small town near in southern illinois called belleville, illinois, and it was about middle school when it hit me "hey, you know, i want to go be an astronaut," and so i was going to go to school, study physics, all the way through my ph.d, apply to nasa and presto-whammo, get to be an astronaut. >> it wasn't quite "presto whammo." after sandra got her ph.d, she worked as an engineer at an aviation company for a while. >> so it took me about, gosh, ten years or so after graduating from college to get to the point where i was ready to apply to nasa, and then i got lucky enough to be selected. >> leland was on a different career track. his thoughts of "touchdown" had nothing to do with rocket landings. it was his football career that was taking off. so, you were drafted by the nfl when you were 22. how did you end up an astronaut? >> when i was drafted i already graduated from college, i graduated with a chemist

sandra? >> reporter: scott, from where i'm standing about a quarter mile away from the los alamos national lab you can see it's a little bit clouded in smoke but where the real problem is over the ridge where the fire is burning fairly close to the property. winds are picking up right now, in fact, officials say they're swirling. that really has them concerned. what also has them concerned, of course, is the town here of los alamos. most people have vacated, it's like a ghost town, but i did catch up with one man, jim durkee, who is living today. >> the fire went from nothing to 40,000 acres overnight. it's now over 60,000 acres. it's extremely dry. >> reporter: with the wind picking up and the weather remaining hot and dry, all 12,000 residents of the town of los alamos were told to leave. it's not known what started the fire sunday and it's growing quickly. >> i seriously believe it could easily go to 100,000 acres. i hope not. god i hope not. but there is unburned fuel out there. >> report

sandra hughes has our report. >> reporter: from the arizona/new mexico border, a gigantic plume of smoke rises above the blaze. firefighters say they've never seen anything like it in this area. already almost 3,000 people have been evacuated, 7,000 people in springerville and eagar, arizona, were on standby until tuesday evening. >> the fire is starting to move again quickly. the winds are very erratic, they're swirling, and getting into heavy fuels and crossed that line where we feel it's safe and asked the folks from eagar to move on out. >> reporter: five structures have burned and firefighters are trying to save more. >> the other night we're doing another night burn and we are literally our backs are to two buildings, people's homes, and i think one of those, you know, had gone down. >> reporter: winds were strong tuesday afternoon but not as are shall as predicted. new mapping shows the fire perimeters appear to be holding. >> last night we went in burnt out maybe about four miles of line and every night's different. >> reporter: the fire has grown the most on the north side which

sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: an ominous sight, smoke creeping closer and closer to homes in los alamos. firefighters are cutting back trees and brush, they're trying to create a buffer zone of open space to protect residential areas and the los alamos national laboratory. >> as far as our houses, our residents, our county, the lab, we're in the best shape we've been since this thing started. >> reporter: the government ordered air quality inspection. in conjunction with the eps. the los alamos lab already analyzed a sample and found nothing dangerous. officials say the air and the complex are safe. >> i do not believe there is any specific danger to the public from our activities at los alamos. the dangers from that, the danger is from that fire on the mountain. >> reporter: some long time residents are reassured. >> those people who work there, they live next door to me. they're my neighbors, they're my friends. i know who they are. >> reporter: late in the day a dangerous situation was discovered, an open natural gas line very near the ridge where the fire could crest. emergen

sandra endo is in washington d.c. with the break down of just what passengers are paying for now. sandra. >> reporter: pam, it's really hard to imagine those good old days when we didn't have to pay for checked bags and changing your flights, having a little bit more travel flexibility. well, airlines are profiting from all those fees to the tune of $5.7 billion last year. $3.4billion just in checked baggage alone. and $2.3 billion for changing your flights or for cancellations. taking a look here at the smart board right now you can see the top three airlines who raked in all that dough, delta, american and u.s. airways just for baggage fees alone and also delta ranking number one again in raising the most money really for reservation and cancellation and change fees. american and united coming up after that. so clearly a lot of money to be made from airlines getting a lot from passengers paying those fees. for example, delta if you check one bag, that's $25. the second bag is $35. and when you get to the third bag it could be a whopping $150 on some airlines. so clearly making a
