i want to turn now to our sandra endo, who has a different vantage point. and sandra, it sounds like, so far, so good. is that true? >> reporter: yeah, fingers crossed, t.j., because after months of preparation, after all the hype, after warning the public to stay home, don't get in their cars, well, take a look. we're here on ventura boulevard, one of the busiest and biggest boulevards here in san fernando valley. if carmageddon was happening, t.j., you would be seeing it, but this almost looks like an empty 405. this street is pretty empty and smooth sailing for a lot of the cars flowing behind me. we've seen a couple of buses, free buses and free train rides for the public during this shutdown. but those buses so far have been mpt as well. weefr seen a couple of early morning people coming out for coffee on bikes. that's another way local officials have been encouraging people to go around during this major shutdown. but still as kareen was mentioning, it's very early here, a lot of the businesses are closed, so a lot of people just waking up. we'll see h

sandra endo is in palm desert right now with the details about the two memorial services. ning, sandra, what's happening today? >> reporter: well, good morning, pam. in just a couple of hours or so we're expecting to see the ford family arrive here to st. margaret's amiscopal church. that's where a private sore ceremony was held yesterday. s are lin carter gave the eulogy in front of a crowd of people who paid their respects including former president george w. bush all to honor the life and legacy of betty ford. and after the family members arrive here today the casket with her body will be taken to the airport. she will have a military transport to grand rapids, michigan. that's where another funeral service will take place tomorrow. and then she will finally be laid to rest next to her late husband the 38th president. >> and then what kind of ceremony will be held? do you know the details? we're looking at what happened yesterday. boy a lot of people were there as well. and are a lot of those people traveling to michigan as well? >> reporter: well, pam, i can tell you al

sandra endo joins us now from palm desert where the first of two funeral services for ford will take place today. sandra, what time does it get started and are people starting to arrive already? >> reporter: well, pam, i can tell you that the private visitation hour will start at 11:20 here in palm desert. and later this afternoon a national tribute for the former first lady and later in the evening that is when the public will be able to come and pay their respects while her body lays in repose. of course security is tight here. final preparations are being made because first lady michelle obama as well as former first lady nancy reagan, bill and hillary clinton and former president george w. bush are all expected to arrive here later this morning to say farewell to the former first lady who has done so much for the country and so much for the challenges that she faced in her life in helping others tackle their problems as well. of course as you mentioned, pam, this is the first of two days of tributes for betty ford. tomorrow her body and casket will be flown to grand rapids, michig

. >>> so for more on the traffic situation in los angeles, let's go to sandra endo who is on ventura boulevard all day long, it has been smooth sailing, how is it going now? >> well, your fingers were crossed as so many people here and it seems like their wishes are working. look at ventura boulevard, it's free flowing as you mentioned. all of those warnings, those crazy pr announcements, they seem to have scared everyone away because the traffic is actually less than a normal day here on ventura boulevard. this is one of the main streets on san fernando valley. and clearly a lot of people have chosen to stay home or take other means of transportation. i'm sitting here at a bus stop because local officials are urging people to take mass transit, they're actually allowing people to ride for free this weekend in the affected areas, more busses, more train service, and we're trying to figure out how people are getting around. we have seen some people ride their bikes, which is good, here in los angeles. but some people are doing the rare thing that a lot of people never, ever do out her

cnn's sandra endo has more. >> suzanne, for the men and women answering the question answering the callain a normal family life. homeownership is often part of their american dream, but for many service men here in las vegas, it has become a nightmare. >> that one means everything. >> packing up and moving out. this is colonel john mcmontgomery's 15th time relocating for the military. but this time is different. as he makes his move to virginia, the financial burden of his north las vegas home will be coming with him. the house he purchased four years ago with much of his life savings, it lost so much value it's a struggle to decide how to handle it best. the house was $480,000, and got appraised for $120,000. relocation is a way of life, with no luxury to ride out the economy. any bad mark on their finances could jeopardize their careers. major john royal and his family are being sent to korea in november. his north las vegas house is now worth nearly 50% less than when he bought it in 2007. it's currently on the market as a short sale, but if there are no takers, he said he will have

sandra endo joining us from a car dealership in los angeles.t are people saying about the debt crisis and how it might affect them? >> reporter: well, there are a lot of nervous jittery people out here. and they don't know how there stalemate is going to affect them. this is one business that will be directly impacted if washington make you lakers don't can come together. they're already trying to slash prices to get these jeeps off the lot, but the economy is tough already and it could get worse as you mentioned because interest rates may go up, car loans will be tougher to get, more expensive. if lawmakers really don't come together on a deal. and i'm joined by the general manager of sales here, ron wheeler. how do you think this whole thing is playing out in washington? you're watching it very closely. how will this impact this business? >> well, our business is very sensitive to the financial needs of our customers. at our ground level, i don't think washington really understands the impact that this financial civil war is having on our bus
