"the new york times" reports they got nothing from it, but the state police say they are happy with the progress they are making. where do you think they stand? >> the state police have been gathering all kinds of information and evidence from the home, from the school. they don't comment directly on what they seize. but lieutenant vance at the state police said they have obtained helpful evidence, important evidence, that they believe will help lead them to an ans

sandra endo has been covering that angle. give me a bit of a break down on how the school district got things up to speed so quickly and how they are prepared for getting the children back into school safely, securely and mentally. >> reporter: well, certainly a big day for students, parents, teachers here in newtown. we saw buses rolling all morning long. and by this hour classes have resumed. as you mentioned there was a two-hour delay for all schools. but 5,400 school students in this district have returned back to school today, the first time since friday's tragedy and they really took monday to push the reset button. students needing a break trying to absorb everything that has happened here in this town. for students and teachers and faculty they have also had a chance to talk to grievance counselors and to figure out how best to approach returning back to school. and, of course, experts are saying it is important for students to get back to a routine and get back to a sense of normalcy. they say this could be the first

sandra endo, there for the first day back. >> the first day back to school in newtown.uesday. and the painful reminder of those who could not. on the bus ride to school, grief was a constant reminder. >> i noticed it was like quiet. so -- because people were thinking about the tragedy that happened. >> reporter: at schools, teachers and students spent time to reflect. >> they just talked about how things will get better than they are now. i felt safe, because when your teachers talk to you and comfort you about what happened. >> reporter: for students at sandy hook elementary, the next time they return to class will be in the new year. newtown superintendent says teachers and students need more time to deal with the trauma and get used to the new space in a neighboring town. state and local officials had no estimates on attendance for the first day back at school. returning to a routine was key for everyone. >> you don't want this to affect you forever. you want to be brave and get back to things normal as possible. we realize we have to go on. but it's very, very hard

cnn's sandra endo has been doing just that. what have you found out, sandra?> reporter: when a tragedy like this happens, you hear experts talk about how it's so important for students and children to retain a sense of routine and a type of normalcy, and that's what school administrators here in newtown are certainly hoping to achieve for a lot of the students at sandy hook elementary school. it remains a crime scene, so students there cannot return to class. what administrators are trying to do, carol, they're trying to work out a plan with a neighboring town in order to accommodate the students of that elementary school. so sandy hook elementary school students will likely go to chalk hill school, which is in monroe, about seven miles from here as early as this week. today all newtown schools are closed so that staff can talk to experts on how to talk to students and how to deal with this tragedy that hit this town. tomorrow all classes are expected to resume for those schools. carol? >> sandra endo, reporting live for us it this morning. >>> we're also lear

cnn's sandra endo is standing by at reagan national airport, across the potomac from washington. ll the spending cuts kick in, what effect will that have on air travel? >> reporter: the big unknown is still how it will affect the everyday traveler. and that is certainly something a lot of people here are wanting to figure out. as for the air traffic controllers union, they released a statement this afternoon saying that it would be a major blow to the airline industry as well as the economy if these cuts are in effect. now, overall, we're talking about a nearly $2.2 billion projected cut to the department of transportation. half of that would come from the faa, and the tsa would suffer a $643 million spending cut. so according to the head of the tsa, they do have a plan b. they have a plan in place ready to go if these cuts are in place. now, he says that the overall front line operations would not be effective, but this would be a major severe budget cut and a lot of travelers here we spoke to, brooke, say they are paying close attention to the negotiations. >> it does concern me

sandra endo joins us from newtown, connecticut. magine what the families and the community are going through at this point. tell us what we are learning about these two little boys. >> reporter: well, little jack pinto, suzanne, was a big sports fan. he loved baseball, basketball and wrestling. he even won his first wrestling match and won a medal. and we're told that some of his teammates came to his funeral wearing medals as well. but his favorite sport was football. and his idol was new york giants' receiver victor cruz. and over the weekend during the game, victor cruz wore a tribute to pinto on his glove saying "today's game is for you, jack." here's also what he had to say. >> it was very emotional. obviously going in when a family is facing that much tragedy, you want to be someone that inspires them, someone that can put a smile on their face in a time when it's tough to do that. it was definitely an emotional one going in, and we wanted this victory. >> reporter: of course, a very, very emotional and sad day here in newtown
