sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: dr.onrad murray maintained he did nothing wrong as he answered to the charge of involuntary manslaughter in connection with michael jackson's death. >> i was innocent then. i definitely plead not guilty. >> reporter: members of jackson's family came to the courthouse for the brief arraignment. the superstar was working on a comeback when he died from an overdose in 2009. murray says he gave the singer the powerful anesthetic propofol to battle jackson's insomnia. prosecutors say murray did not administer cpr correctly, he delayed calling 911, and he didn't tell paramedics that he had given jackson the powerful drug. murray's defense attorneys suggest that jackson administered the propofol himself while the doctor was out of the room. murray's lawyers say they fully expect their client to be acquitted, and are not interested in a plea bargain. >> dr. murray's been waiting 22 months for the opportunity to do this. >> reporter: both sides in the case say they're ready to go forward, so the j

sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: a barrage of gunfire at a mobile home park in western ohio afteran took the life of a sheriff's deputy who never had a chance to take cover. >> 69 is down. i repeat, 69 is down. >> reporter: the gun battle was between a man inside this trailer and law enforcement officials. >> right now, i've got a silver trailer with a male with a shotgun in it. and i've got suzanne down in front of that trailer. >> reporter: deputy hopper shot to death, another police officer was injured and rushed to a waiting ambulance. the suspect, identified as michael ferryman, was also killed. the 40-year-old deputy was a recently married mother of two. she was shot while photographing a footprint in the mobile home park in enon beach. she had responded to a call of shots fired in the area. >> open the door. >> reporter: after hopper was shot, police tried to convince the suspect to surrender, but he opened fire. >> all of a sudden, we heard you, in your trailer, blam. shotgun. right through my front door. hit my heater. busted out the back window and my wife and i got cut

sandra hughes on the work ahead. >> reporter: congresswoman gabrielle giffords will soon begin painstakingation inside this gym at tirr memorial hermann hospital in houston. she still can't speak and has some paralysis on her right side but she has completed two sexes of therapy in the room. >> she has speech therapy and rehabilitation therapy and she is progressing well. >> reporter: he knows firsthand recovery takes a long road. >> it doesn't happen overnight. it happens so slowly sometimes you don't even realize it's happening. but, unless you continue to work at it, it won't happen. >> reporter: part have the congresswoman's skull was removed in tucson to relieve pressure on her brain. doctors are waiting for excess fluid to drain before they can move her out of the intensive care unit here at the hospital. doctors say the trip from tucson was flawless and that well wishers yelled at her ambulance. >> it made her not only cry but smile so she is someone who deeply cares what's going on around her. >> reporter: she was welcomed to houston as warmly. >> thank you congresswoman giffords.
