but as sandra hughes reports, an experimental vaccine may offer a lifeline. >> reporter: brad silvernd his wife are anticipating the birth of their second child, but he received a devastating diagnosis, brain cancer in its deadliest form. >> all i wanted to do was make sure i could see him the first day he was born. and that was my main focus. >> reporter: many patients with glioblastoma only live about a year after diagnosis. the silvers quickly sought out whatever new research was available and found dr. linda lial at the johnson cancer center at the university of california. she was testing an experimental vaccine that uses a patient's own cancer proteins to teach the body to fight the disease. results of her studies show patients with the most severe cases live twice normal 15 minutes after having surgery and chemotherapy. >> about 90% survived over one year, 75% survived over two years and about 6% survived over three years. >> reporter: brad silver lived to hold his newborn son and watch him grow up. it's been 8 years since that diagnosis. they now level in cleveland. >> i thin

sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: a former manager at southern california's san onofre nuclear powers he was fired last fall after he tried to bring employee safety concerns to supervisors. >> i was told to not address those concerns and the exact words were, they don't need you to be their superhero. >> reporter: mike mason and rick busnardo who both worked more than 25 years were in charge of making canisters to store spent nuclear fuel. they say they complained about an employee welding the canisters incorrectly. >> eventually it could have failed to contain the fuel rod like it was supposed to. >> reporter: mason and busnardo took their complaints to the nuclear regulatory commission. so did paul diaz. diaz is suing southern california edison which owns san onofre. the suit claims employees complained of excessive overtime and fatigue. >> we have conducted a thorough review of the concerns and we are satisfied with how the employee was handled, and how the issues that were raised were dealt with. let me emphasize, this type of thing is taken very, very seriously. >> reporter: san

sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: abby dorn was overjoyed as she prepared for marriage and a familyt when her triplets were born in 2006, horrific medical mistakes were made. and abby ended up a paraplegic, unable to speak. now, her ex-husband dan, and her parents, are squaring off in court over abby's right to have the children visit her. abby now lives with her parents in south carolina. they say she blinks for communication. a long blink means yes, a short blink means no. when a reporter asked if she wanted to see her kids last year, she responded with a long, firm blink. in court, dan testified that the children are too young to spend long periods of time with the woman who can only lay motionless. this appears to be a landmark case. while the california supreme court has ruled disabled parents cannot be denied custody, this case is battling over visitation. >> we're requesting visitation three times a year. two weeks during the summer, a week over the winter holiday, and then a week during spring. so not a lot of time. >> reporter: in court, dan dorn's attorney told the judge t

sandra hughes is in santa monica with a look at what's happened down there tonight. sandra? >> reporter: well, allen, all day we've been watching the waves here in san mon calm the first tsunami waves hit about 8:0, 8:45, but they've -- 8:30, 8:45 but they've said steady. south of us in redondo beach, there were several boats damaged in the harbor. a 60-foot vessel broke free of its mooring, hit the pier and over in catalina island there were several boats damaged in that harbor from the surge of quarter -- water. a huge wave of water pushed into the southern california marina, throwing boats around freeing them from the docks. one boat overturned and started to sink. not far from the marina, people came out to watch the waves roll in. the tsunami created a major tide ship as the water moved in and quickly retreated. >> my wife and i swim out here every morning. we've done it for 29 years. never seen it like this. >> reporter: this forced some people living near the coast to head for higher ground. residents here near the ocean decided to wait out waves. lifeguards were patr
