sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: georgina cooper is a breast cancer survivor who watches what sheats. >> protein, vegetables, fruit, versus a lot of carbs is better for me. >> reporter: a new study shows by avoiding excessive weight gain she is improving the odds her breast cancer won't come back. >> we think that if you increase weight after you have had a diagnosis of breast cancer, you have for circulating estrogen. >> reporter: and higher estrogen levels can trigger a recurrence of breast cancer. kaiser permanente's study of more than 18,000 breast cancer survivors found women who gained the most weight were 14% more likely to experience a cancer recurrence compared to those whose weight was stable or only gained a few pounds. those at risk are those who gained 10% more of their prediagnosis weight. for a woman who weighs 130 pounds, that is 13 pounds or more. after cancer treatment, the doctor counsels patients to exercise and maintain weight. >> it's a good idea to get back on a weight control plan after chemotherapy. >> reporter: since the 2007 diagnosis, georgina has lost

sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: that's the sound of money leaving drivers' wallets. >> most of my gas these days. >> reporter: rising gas prices have put the squeeze on drivers. many people are pumping less into their tanks, reversing what had been a steady increase in demand for gas. in fact, for five weeks in a row, drivers bought less gas than they did a year ago. the last time americans cut back so much was in december when snowstorms forced people to stay home. 70% of gas stations say sales are down. prices have jumped about 40 cents a gallon since mid february. the national average is now $3.77 per gallon of regular. it's inching toward the all-time high of $4.11 set back in 2008. >> it's ridiculous. look at the gas prices, i can barely afford $20 right now. >> public transportation, i'm on my bike. that's the way to go. >> here in san francisco, a gallon of regular is already above the $4 mark. prices are going up faster than people are cutting back. experts say we could hit $5 a gallon in california by memorial day that could force some people to rethink their vacation pla

as sandra hughes reports, what's in l.a.' enough to take your breath away. >> reporter: even on a beautiful spring day, a line of smog can be seen on the horizon over los angeles. the greater l.a. area is ranked at the top of the american lung association's list of cities with the worst air. asthma sufferer dina feels it when the pollution is high. >> the chest tightness. i'm a little bit slower. i can hear a little bit of wheezing. >> reporter: the state of the air report finds 48% of u.s. residents live in counties where smog or ozone levels are too high. 20% live in areas where there are too many short-term spikes in pollution, and 6% live in areas with harmful year-round soot or particles in the air. >> the very tiny particles, instead of impacting in the throat or the nose, make it all the way down into the lungs. and they carry with them all kinds of other toxic chemicals. so that's what we think increases the risk of things like lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. >> reporter: the new report shows air quality in ma
