sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: texas is a virtual tinder box. the state's largest fire is burning in bastrop county east of austin. it's already destroyed more than 475 homes and shows no sign of stopping. >> it's really very tragic is what it is. when you get a fire established like this, and the weather conditions as they are, it becomes very difficult and challenging situation. >> reporter: tropical storm lee brought high winds to texas over the weekend, and fanned the flames. >> the wind is just horrific out there. low humidity's making these firefighters use indirect attacks. >> reporter: firefighters are working around the clock, but relying mostly on air attacks. at least 5,000 people have been forced from their homes, some are staying in emergency shelters, waiting for word. >> i never did get to go to the house and see anything, get anything. this -- what i have on is all i was able to leave the house with yesterday. >> reporter: texas governor rick perry is urging people to heed local evacuation orders. >> i understand that losing your

sandra hughes tells us a lot of witnesses saw that plane go down. >> an airfield in reno, nevada, is a debris field, a world war ii fighter plane, the galloping ghost, plunged into spectators and disintegrated on impact. >> it was going up at an impossible angle, slightly above vertical. twisted, turned, wham. >> it looked like he must have been pulling hard on the stick to get as far away from the stands as possible. >> the pilot was jimmy leeward, participating in the national championship air races. described as a car race in the sky. >> he started going up in front of me. i wondered how many people got hurt. >> officials call this a mass casualty event with several dozen injured, many critically. one helicopter on display was put in service bringing the injured to an area hospital. the races attracted scrutiny in the past over safety concerns. four pilots were killed in 2007 and 2008. the races have been cancelled for the rest of the weekend. sandra hughes, cbs news. >>> we have joe vasquez live in reno with more updates through outthe day and at 5:30 here on cbs 5. >>> a wanted

sandra hughes with how one man barely escaped with his life. investigators say they may have found critical evidence into he just flew back this afternoon. joe, you've seen first-hand the tragedy un-fold in reno. especially today --- people are talking about the safety of this kind of event.--- what kind of answers did you get? do you get the impression that they are now ready to address some of these tougher questions? about whether frankly the faa does a good enough job of checking out the planes and the pilots before the race. >> up until now, 20 pilots died in the 47 year history okay but now it's spectators who were killed. do you get the impression they're ready to address some of the more difficult questions? >> reporter: when we were asking the questions, frankly the answer was it's too soon. we need to talk about this. we don't want to speculate about what happened but yes behind the scenes there's a lot of talk. in fact, reno officials some of them were saying i'm not sure we should continue to have the race even. it goes from there.
