sandy levin of michigan, as you know, the chairmen has left, and then he became acting chairman and he laid a letter to the congress to me, that he wants to retain his chairmanship of the health subcommittee. he wanted to not serve as acting chair. the house committee is a very important committee. he has devoted his life to it. -- to implement it, he did not want to lead chairmanship of that committee. with that, we are pretty happy about bringing this jobs bill to the floor. it will be one in a series of others' jobs bills. i can take any questions you may have. >> there have been a lot of steps toward your goal of making this, there remain questions about some members. i wonder what you say to americans who might wonder are democrats better than republicans? >> we spend our time meeting our ethical responsibilities to the american people by doing the job here for them, to making sure the leadership we provide and the legislation that we pass is in the people's interest and not in the special interests. that is a high ethical responsibility. in terms of how ethics, how we live up to

host: sandy, utah, a parent. what you think of your public school system? caller: over all in our state, i would give it a c. the reason is -- well, before the president came in they had almost every friday off and then the kids were leaving at 2:30 p.m., but really they were kind of straggling out at 1:30 p.m.. then they had so many holidays and snow days, they were just not going to school. but when i used to go to school, we stayed until 4:00. and if you wanted extra activities or extra sports activities, you stayed one extra hour but there were buses to make sure you went home safely and you went to school monday through friday. and the teachers had time to take care of their grading and so forth. host: another teacher, kensington, connecticut. anne, do you teach in public school? caller: yes, i did teach. i am a retired teacher. i taught american history, grade 8. it was cut greater public schools in kensington, connecticut? where is it? caller: it is about 50 miles from hartford. geographically in the center of the state. i would rate my school system

i remember the merger with travelers and i guess it was citicorp a few years ago, sandy wild, it was a much touted goal. it was the only way to really compete on a global stage. your goals are different now. why are they different? why has that business model failed or if it hasn't failed, why are you no longer interested in it? >> mr. mcwaters, markets are different, the environment is different. the way -- competition is happening is different. if we see what's happened over the last couple of years, a lot of the places where funding was received like securitizations and/or other areas are largely not there. so when you look at the changes have that occurred, that has had an influence on that strategy. but more fundamentally, as i looked at the company -- by the way, it was a complete dispassionate review, not examine, but a dispassionate review of what we needed to be. we did it with complete integrity as a company. we concluded, by the way, that that was an interesting model but did not add sufficient value to our clients and did not necessarily create, therefore, sufficient valu

. >> thank you, sandy. ron williams, the ceo of aetna, is going to give some comments. i appreciate him not only being here but being a part of this dialogue for the past year or more. i had the pleasure of working with ron over a number of years. welcome. >> madam secretary, i appreciate the opportunity to be here on behalf of my colleagues, the opportunity to work with you as well. we really share common hurdles. we need to make sure working families have access to affordable health care. we recognize that our issues, particularly in the independent insurance market -- the industry last year came forward and supported many reforms to eliminate employment as a condition for getting help insurance. to make that work, we need to look at the overall health insurance pool. we are only a successful -- we are only successful when we meet our customer's needs. that means affordable health insurance. we want to get bureaucracy out of health care. it is $2 billion to make sure that everyone has access. fundamentally, we want to make sure the insurance market works for everyone.

the toughest job i had was serving on the school board back in big sandy, montana. i also am a former teacher. as a former school board member and a former teacher, i appreciate the long, hard, often thankless hours that teachers put in. to say that they are not the highest paid profession would be an understatement. so, mr. president, i was shocked when i heard about the bad news hitting teachers all across montana. this week, my staff and i spoke to folks like the ones in alpga ypsilanti district in billings, montana. employees there just received word that their health insurance rates were going up, and i mean way up. normally, a big rate hike might be 10% or 20%. sometimes we hear folks getting slammed for 30% or 40%. but the folks at allegian, their rates are skyrocketing this year by 69%. you think that's bad? talk to the folks in hinsdale or seko, montana. they just found out their rates are going up, too, by more than 70%. then in the nashua school district, rates are going up by 72%. the rate given to those employees who purchase family insurance, they are
