new york was not the hometown to the sandy hook victims, but america felt that sandy hook was every town in america, it is indeed an american town. it's filled with wonderful people who hug and grief together. that day, that night in the church and in the days following when they were calling hours and funerals, one after the other seem like they would never end. in some ways, they have never ended. because, for those families, those losses are still real and urgent. for us, the task of honoring those 20 beautiful children not to be real and urgent even more so today than it was then. that day we prayed in the church, i said to the congregation, the whole world is watching. the whole world was watching. world is watching america to see whether we will act. they are not the only country with mental health problems. our rate of mental illness is no greater than any other developed industrial country. but our rate of gun violence is off the charts compared to other countries. there is no excuse for it, there is no need a rational explanation. as we prayed and grieved then and in the act of

not every set of parents from sandy hook who lost kids are engaged politically, but many are.who aren't, i keep in touch with because they're doing a lot of good works. many of them are down here in washington lobbying for these pieces of legislation on a regular basis. and, you know, they'red a vo t -- advocates for the rest of their lives. >> i want to come back to that, but i want to ask you about this "washington post" piece talking about the legacy of newtown. it frankly is a kind of sad legacy. lockdowns. kids going through active shooter training. security stepped up at schools across the country. what do you consider the most significant change since newtown to keep kids safe? what is the newtown legacy for you? >> well, i think the newtown legacy is first and foremost the birth of the modern anti-gun violence movement. this is a constant conversation we are having in this country in a way that did not exist prior to sandy hook in the virginia elections that occurred in november, the number two motivating issue for voters was the issue of guns. and it is a conversation
