reporter: carol brandy who was interviewed by cbs 2 news as she evacuated during sandy and the hundreds that came to the beache big celebration including students have come a long way. >> i live in belmar and i survived hurricane sandy, so i'm so excite thad the boardwalk's open. >> reporter: this was the first shore town the republican governor visited after the storm's wrath. he and the mayor, a democrat, promised each other they would do all they could to have this boardwalk complete by memorial day weekend. >> the biggest reason that i want to come and open these boardwalk is because i want new jersey and the region and the country to know that new jersey has come back. >> we had a tremendous amount of water in town. you know, it took us over six days to get the water out. we had pieces of boardwalk pushed in six city blocks that had to get removed. >> reporter: some of the debris, jake's crab shack, a building completely demolished during the storm. he's back in a rented trailer. >> the community has all come together to make this real, you know, come to life. it's amazing. >> that was wcbs-tv's christin

sandy. as the beaches are now reopened for this summer, 22 of the 23 boardwalks along the shore here are reopened. the real hope for the people who live in this community, i spoke to the mayor of asbury park, a short time ago to send a postcard to america saying we're back open for business. tourism in this state is nearly a $40 billion industry. asbury park is not as badly hit as some other communities here, seaside heights of course, manoloking badly hit. but already some reconstruction is taking place here. they admit it will be many more years before it's certainly complete. >> peter, anecdotally, what is the response of to fema and efforts from fema? we know that christie, in the aftermath of sandy was full of positive words. do residents feel the same way? do business owners feel the same way? >> i think the word association with fema is a lot more positive than it was post katrina. particularly when you focus on emergency response. the immediate emergency response, the people here with very satisfied by that. there's obviously been a lot of red tape and challenges in the time since one of

axelrod: as terrell brown reported earlier, this is beginning of a crucial time for beach communities battered by superstorm sandyast october. business owners operate under different economic rules on the jersey shore, making most of their livings between now and labor day. we sat down with the owners of the harvey cedars shellfish company on new jersey's leech island to hear firsthand about the challenge now under way. >>. >> reporter: this is summer number what for you? >> 39. i'll gol with that. 39. >> we thought we'd have a real job right now, it just never worked out. beaches are open. they are hoping to bring business back after hurricane sandy took that huge financial toll of $37 billion across the state. and seaside heights, a shore town that took one of the biggest hits from the storm, officially reopened its beach, its boardwalk and all the arcades. nbc's michelle franzen is out there for us now. so, despite the rain, how does it look? ready for visitors? >> i have to tell you alex it has been a long seven months for seaside heights and all up and down the shore. and everyone affected by sandy. seven months ago i was standing here and this boardwalk was destroyed. rebuilt behind me at this time. of course, the landscape dramatically changed. the beaches, of course, the amusement rights are not back. but the businesses are reopened here. on the board walk for seaside heights and the business owners have certainly made a great effort to make sure that they could be opened for this symbolic, unofficial start to summer. as you mentioned, the weather not quite cooperating like business owners and everyone else would like. but, they're also still coming out here to the s

sandy. unleashed upon the small beach community of breezy point in queens, new york. >> destroyed. it's like the apocalypse hit. >> don't know where they're going to take us. you don't know where. >> reporter: today those who lost everything remember their volunteer firefighters. who never stopped battling to save their community. >> the water kept coming in. >> reporter: as the water rose marty and his team had to flee the firehouse. in wave whipping waters, eight feet high. and then in the midst of all the flooding, a fire sparks. quickly growing to a six-alarm blaze. marty and crew members never abandon their neighbors even as hurricane force winds carried the ember setting house after house ablaze. >> flames were up 40 feet in the air the we had propane tanks exploding. gas tanks exploding. today breezy point is still recovering. of the almost 3,000 homes here most are vacant or demolished. >> the volunteer firehouse destroyed is being rebuilt. a symbol of the heart and soul of this tiny community. >> a long time afterwards we are going to be here saving lives and stopping fire

sandy. in the lesser known and harder hit town of normandy beach, schlossbach has labrador lounge which reopened she says customers are nowhere to be found. >> i'm dying down there, i have no customers. everybody thinks the island is closed. you drive through there and see houses on top of houses, restaurants and businesses aren't reopening, and i'm really scared because that's my home. >> reporter: memorial day weekend is the shore's first big chance to bring business back and reward months of hard work. schlossbach is back to worrying about the weather. >> to us the weather is everything. if it is 90 degrees and sunny we'll be backepacked. if it's rainin and cold we'll not be busy. >> we've talked about the unemployment rate is 7.5% she's having the opposite problem, looking to hire but she cannot find workers. she says people sort of still have it in their mind the jers w jersey shore was completely destroyed by sandy. >> the last shore town i visited with my kids is asbury park and it's changed so much over the last ten years. i hope people spend some money on the shore because it really mat

sandy. seven months later, the damage is still overwhelming but most of the beaches and the boardwalks are openust in time for the summer tourism season they count on most. nbc's stephanie gosk is on the boardwalk in seaside heights. good evening. >> reporter: good evening. there wasn't a board left on the boardwalk after the storm, not a business undamaged. seaside heights was one of the worst affected communities along the shore. today, 22 of 23 boardwalks are open. it's beginning to look a little bit like summer. for a moment today with the sun shining, food frying, and crowds growing, seaside heights almost felt the same. >> it's a beautiful today, a great day to be out. >> reporter: after the worst storm in new jersey's history, restoring boardwalks and businesses in time for the summer became the state's number one priority. the jersey shore has 130 miles of coastline, drawing 59 million tourists a year and bringing in $19 billion. in the days after sandy it was hard to imagine any kind of summer season at all until the rebuilding began. from the destruction rose a new boardwalk 16 blocks
