you just heard brook baldwin talk about dawn hochsprung, the principal of sandy hook elementary, a longtime educator. she'd been at the school, i think, for 12 years. we've been hearing so much about her just in the last couple of days. there's so many other people that we' really just starting to learn about. dawn became the principal of sandy hook two years ago. lilian is the former chair of the newtown board of education. she helped choose dawn for that position. she joins me now. lilian, you knew all of the educators who were killed. you knew a number of the children as well. first of all, how are you holding up? >> my families, it comes and goes. the first day we were a mess and couldn't sleep at night. just like everybody else in newtown, i couldn't sleep. at 3:00 in the morning, i got up, powered up my computer, and half of newtown was on facebook. you do what you can. i just took a meal to one of the families. everyone's doing that. the grocery store was -- the nar where the dishes are that you buy to give is decimated. so everyone's trying to help now. >> what do you want people to

"cnn newsroom" continues now with brooke baldwin who is in newtown, connecticut. >>> i'm brooke baldwin live today in newtown, connecticut, where today the new reality is sinking in. today parents are living alongside an empty room of the child they lost. left behind in that room, pajamas, favorite toys, books they always read together, parents who know this, even the smell of their child's pillow. and these first responders being called heroes, but still day in and day out living with the images no one could have prepared them to see. today, families are deciding on coffins, head stones, choosing songs that will play at the funerals of first graders. want to tell you about the two little boys who are actually being remembered right now. the funeral for 6-year-old jack pinto began just about an hour ago. jack will be laid to rest today in newtown village cemetery. just a little bit of background on this 6-year-old, jack adored football, his favorite player was new york giants receiver victor cruz. apparently he watched giants games while proudly wearing his cruz jersey. look at that che

brook that goes through the town. but then when you go over a hill just on the other side, a quarter mile away from the little village of sandyk, the worst thing imaginable happened. i got there on friday evening. you go up to where the live television locations are, and you come upon first a firehouse which has become very familiar here. a firehouse where kids were rushed a few hundred feet away from the school. and where parent s went to see whether or not their kids were there, whether or not they were alive. there was some incredible reunions there where people were relieved to find their children. and then as we herd slard slowl by one, there was a group of 20 parents standing there who were told their kids were not coming out. that happened right in that firehouse full of volunteer firefighters who could never have prepared for anything like this. i talked to one of them who said they won't even show you pictures like this in training. they had to rush in volunteers and encounter the most horrific scene they would ever see in their lives. >> oh, my god. talk about the night, willie, about being outside the school when t
