respond, sandy hook school.edical emergencies. >> i have multiple ambulance personnel coming inbound. can we stage the area command area in the school parking area? >> they found a chilling scene, a horrific scene, the scene which all the first responders say they have never seen before. it's a safe community. before this, they only had one reported homicide in the past ten years. but now, newtown will be synonymous with towns like columbine, blacksburg, like towns where we've seen so many of these tragedies. i want to bring in mary snow right now. and right now law enforcement sources say the shooter was 20-year-old adam lanza and say they found his mother's body at the home they shared together. you are outside that home right now. what more can you tell us about this investigation? >> reporter: well, john, i can tell you that the police still have blocked off the road leading to the lanza home. and yesterday s.w.a.t. teams had descended on this area for several hours. and as you mentioned, adam lanza's mother

here's what we know this morning about what happened at sandy hook elementary school. in about 30 minutes we expect authorities to hold a news conference right where i am and release the identities of the victims. police say 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed as well as six adults at the school including the principal and psychologist. sources say adam lanza was armed with three guns, two on him, one found in a car nearby. police say he got the guns from his mother who owned them. she was licensed to have them. she was found dead in her home about 2 1/2 miles from where i am now. every new detail helped paint a picture of a horrifying tragedy. cnn's anderson cooper explains how it unfolded moment by moment. >> all units, the individual i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gun shots. >> reporter: the first word was chilling. it only got worse. >> they're reporting multiple fatalities involved in this shooting at the elementary school. >> reporter: with each new report, the horror deepened. >> reports say the number of dead c

but to be clear, not the students of sandy hook elementary school. students at other schools, they are seeing more police, more counselors on hand, just being in town the last couple of days there are a lot of police officers just sitting in the driveways of a lot of the schools here, clearly security being beefed up in this town right now. teachers union says classes will discuss the shooting in age appropriate manner. it is not clear yet, though, when sandy hook elementary school will resume class. but when they do, it will certainly be at a different school in the neighboring town of monroe. and i just got back from newtown this morning, and during dinner time last night, i was invited to spend some time with these two volunteer firefighters, they're with newtown hook and ladder and they went into emergency mode, of course, early last friday morning. they are rob mana and ray corbo. they served their community now for more than 20 years each. but the day they got that call, they say it was like nothing they had ever seen before. how long have you

he went to sandy hook elementary school.e fourth and also the fifth grade. he was six years old when his family moved into this house back in 1998. six years old, the same age as some of these children he cut down in cold blood. we have seen a photo of a t-shirt that the classmates signed his name on the t-shirt and a former classmate said that she used to ride the bus with him to sandy hook elementary school. and the school bus today stopped no more than 50 feet from his home. children, first graders who live in this area, they were getting on to that bus. and there are other students who will never get on that bus. that is the connection. we have confirmed that he in fact attended numerous grades. so even though officials say he had no recent connection, he had a connection to that school. >> there were reports that the shooter was home alone in the days leading up to friday. what do you know about that? >> yeah, well, that's exactly right, anderson, the mother actually left the gunman alone in the home for several days pr
