the sandy hook families here pursued a theory of negligent entrustment.utomatic rifle used by adam lanza, the primary guns that he used among others, and because it's a military-grade weapon it's very similar to what soldiers use though it does not fire in an automatic mode, but they said it was negligent to entrust it to civilians. initially a state court judge in connecticut had said that the families couldn't proceed, that the federal law barred this lawsuit from happening. the connecticut supreme court reversed in 2019 so that's now seven years after the shooting, and just now this case has been settled rather than going to trial. >> so what is the significance of what a settlement represents? we're still waiting to see the details in remington has to admit any kind of a fault. if they are arguing it shouldn't have been for civilians, shouldn't have been for them and we're seeing an historic $73 million settlement. what should that tell us? >> you know, remington is already in bankruptcy, so for them this settlement agreement, it will be interesting t

obviously something positive they're saying is going to prevent the next sandy hook. do you think the settlement in any way makes such sure, tragedies less likely in future? well, i certainly think those that make and sell these type of weapons will think twice of the impact of what they do. however, the problem is already there in the u. s. i think that there are so many guns in society that it's difficult to say this having a huge impact a day. this is the 1st settlement to all of its kind, quite a historic and event here. and do you see this opening up the floodgates and encouraging a barrows of legal actions against going to make is victims of out of my say things . well, i think you have to examine 1st what kind of gun was used. it's sandy hook compared with what kind of gun is used in the typical american shooting that isn't, you know, a robbery that kind of thing. and the answer is that the a are 15, the military style weapon, what they indirectly call an assault weapon is used in probably less than 10 percent. maybe even more like one percent of those events.
