tomorrow marks two months since the sandy hook massacre, and joining us now is suzy young, the co-founder of sandy hook promisewe'll talk about that later. and also with us is bill sherlock. his wife, mary, was the school psychologist there at sandy hook elementary. she died in the gunfire, but she is going to be honored with a presidential citizens medal on friday. bill, i just want to check in first to see how you're doing as, you know, a grieving loved one who lost his dear wife, mary. how are you? >> we're fine. my daughters and i are -- we have our moments. good moments, bad moments, good days, bad days. two days ago would have been mary's birthday, so that was a little bit of a rough slide that day, but we're doing it day by day. >> i bet. did you, by any chance, hear what the president said in the state of the union regarding gun control and did you have an opinion about what he said? >> i did watch the state of the union address last night, and again, one of the reasons why i put my efforts behind the sandy hook promise, as well as the foundation for my wife, is because i believe that a multifaceted ap

the sandy hook promise is the start of our change. this is a promise to do everything in our power to be remembered not as the town filled with grief and victims, but as the place where real change began. >> this is a promise to be open to all possibilities. there is no agenda other than to make our communities and our nation a safer, better place. >> yeah, i'm matthew kauffman with the hartford courant. can you give us a sense of how active you intend to be? do you anticipate a point at which sandy hook promise would actually be testifying, lobbying, if you will? >> we have to take the time to educate ourselves. we have to take the time to have that dialogue. but absolutely, there's going to become a moment in time where we're going to take those positions. we're a platform for people to come together with one voice and actions to move us forward. >> some of us who came together to start sandy hook promise are gun owners. we hunt, we target shoot, we protect our homes, we're collectors, we teach our sons and daughters how to use guns

of sf city here in san francisco, they led a national discussion on the web to join in the sandy hook promise that they personally were taking up this cause and using the web site to spread the information and word that sandy hook should never happen again and as they arrive on the scene of this national debate they are now turning their attention to the very cities that they are located in and realizing that in their home towns we've got this issue. but the technology companies are talking with each other, they are using that web site to have a national discussion so that's a great thing because more people who have the discussion and put in front of them kids whose lives need to be saved, families and safety, are going to be of great benefit of this. they are also part of the national effort with gabby gilford and mark kelly to, again, be part of those conversations and very difficult ones because many of them are company owners. they want to have those conversations with the nra individuals as well and they are not afraid of those conversations and they use the media to do that. we have a

next day, december 17th, a new group called newtown united, which has since been renamed the sandy hook promisethey held their first meeting to talk about ideas for addressing gun violence, and for keeping their town's tragedy in the news until change was made. then two days later, december 19th, president obama announces the formation of a white house gun violence task force and puts vice president biden in charge of that effort. the next day, december 20th, vice president biden already gets to work, already meeting with law enforcement leaders in washington. and we get the photo op to show he is doing it. that same day, mayors against illegal guns makes news with data shows major gaps in the background system. the very next day, december 21st, president obama observes a moment of silence at the white house that they allow to be photographed to honor the victims of the sandy hook shootings. that same day the nra breaks its silence on the issue since sandy hook. they call for armed police officers to be posted in every american school. that leads of course to a cascade of more than 24 hours of

the mayors committee, the brady campaign, the victims themselves, the newtown alliance, the sandy hook promiserganizations that have sprung from this horrific tragedy. all are making a difference in organizing that grassroots appeal for action. and it really has to be out in the communities that are no different from sandy hook. because if it could happen in sandy hook, it can happen anywhere. the quintessential new england town where you have an all volunteer fire department, a police department that does fine on the kinds of crimes it investigates, nothing ever of this dimension and magnitude. and it could happen anywhere. and it has happened everywhere. since newtown, 1900 people have been killed by gun violence in our cities and in our rural communities, all across america. if america pays attention, communicates to the congress that it really cares, really cares as much as the folks who have been so vocal on behalf of the nra, it will get done. >> you heard it here first. it may sound hackneyed, but when you call your congress member, people listen. senator blumenthal, thank you very much
