we are different today than we were before sandyhook. this problem is with us. the same problem has existed for decades, but we are different, because we know we can and must do something about it. there was evil in that day, but there was also great goodness. of the first responders to stop the shooting through the bravery when they appeared at the school. the courage and bravery of the clergy. who that evening conducted a vigil that we attended when many resolved to light candles instead of curse the darkness. the greatness of leadership demonstrated by many of the public officials beginning with the first alleged woman, the legislators who passed in connecticut a measure that will provide a model for the country. and the leadership of our course, thed of great goodness of the educators cradledw themselves young people seeking to save them heroically gave their lives. courage andof leadership should inspire us at this critical moment. they should inspire us to think better and do better and resolve that we will not let this moment pass. we will seize this oppo

we had our own sandyhook in britain in the mid ' 90s. 16 five-year-old children gunned to death by aic. it was never made right. everyone came together and said we have to do something. we did do dramatic stuff related to gun control. i don't get why it's so politically divided here. why, if you're pro-gun, you have to be a republican. if you're pro-gun control or gun safety, you have to be a democrat. >> you can look around the world and you'll find actually, by enlarge, the people that tend to be for tough gun control measures, in countries like australia, tend to be conservatives. they're the people who listen to police chiefs, worried about law&order, feel like it's important for streets to be safe, for cities to be safe. those positions have traditionally been associated with conservativism. america has this unique thought of wild west culture and the right to bear arms. the practical reality here is that england and wales have a 3% rate homicide compared to the united states. that means their rate is 3% of ours. our rate of homicide is 12 times that of the industrialized world

>> how could you have happen what happened at sandyhook and your answer is, according to kelly, kellyi want to be fair, kelly, do any of the proposals you've heard about controlling gun violence in america, do you support anything that would actually reduce the number of guns in circulation? >> yes, absolutely. i support true background checks that allow us to know who has the gun, meaning without registering them. that doesn't work. michigan has had a law since 1927. you have to register -- you have to have a permit for a handgun. and have you seen detroit lately? so i'm for true background checks and true knowing who has the gun if it's -- and knowing about that person who wants a gun. here's a great example, piers. you know, the hipaa laws and all of these privacy laws that medical conditions mean that i, as a gun seller, could do a background check on somebody who wants a gun, but there's no way that i have any access to know that that person is mentally ill, which has been the pattern with some of these most recent shooters that you point out. >>> so, i, as a mother of children a

. >> we've seen disasters at sandyhook and others, very little photography taken during those.scene, as were some other photographers, able to capture the full horror and beam it to the world. do you think that's had an effect on influencing public opinion? the fact that people could actually see the horror, firsthand? >> i think it put a face on this -- it put a face on news bombings. it brought it to a personal level. you're able to see the people who this affected. and i think -- i did my job as a photographer, as a journalist. and i look back and i go, you know, i'm glad i did what i did. i know it was difficult for people to see these images, but we had to see it. the world had to see the horror that was there, that, you know, this was terrorism. and i felt that my duty, as a photo journalist was to capture those images. i didn't even know if any other photographers were there. i just kept shooting what i could shoot. >> and of all of the images you shot, so many powerful images, which of the ones stand out for you in your mind? >> there's a photo that i keep looking back
