. >> next, professor sanford levinson sat down with booktv to talk about his book "constitutional faith" in which he argues that the u.s. constitution is worship today a degree that is unhealthy for our democracy. this interview is part of booktv's column series. this week we're at the university of texas at austin. >> and you're watching booktv on c-span2. 48 hours of nonfiction books every weekend. and we are on the campus of the university of texas in austin as part of our university series here on booktv. and we're pleased to be joined by sanford levinson who is a professor of law here at the university of texas and the author of this book among others, "constitutional faith," is the name of the book that we'll be talking with him about. professor levinson, do americans have too much faith in the constitution in your view? >> yes. i think that one of the exceptional aspects about the united states is a great deal of discussion these days about american exceptionalism is the veneration directed at the united states' constitution. there is no other country in the world i'm aware of th

i want to make sure that sanford cisco has a working-class population. i want to make sure that we do not take for granted because we are seen as more cosmopolitan, that that excuses' us from not tackling issues of poverty, which there are still substantial pockets of it in san francisco, despite what others may argue. that, to me, oddly it's our requirements, to make sure our city, in its reputation of being forward thinking and progressive, learns to make sure that that translates into economic, so that this is not just a city for those who can afford it. we want to get down to brass tacks issues about not just public safety but the root causes that we want to address of job training, job placement, giving our youth something to aspire to, giving young adults something that they can turn to, giving people who feel that they need that extra level of support from city hall, from local government, the ability to be able to reach out -- that is also what tonight is part of. he is the real supervisor, my son. he just turned two last week. i know i was going

, who is also the ex-wife of governor mark sanford. mistress note righty. ms. sanford wrote an op-ed, clarifying it wasn't an endorsement, but praising herman cain in an op-ed that ran in the "charleston post and courier" a few days before the allegations came against him with regard to the sexual harassment charges. however, that carl ran again a few days later in a different newspaper in the "state" newspaper. the editors there offered ms. sanford the opportunity to amend the article to reflect the new charges that had arisen against mr. cain. and it does, in fact, appear that she did so, referring three times, in fact, to the allegations that surfaced against him. now, i want to read for you one of the differences in one of the same paragraphs that she wrote that reflect the changes and the new references to the allegations. first in the october article that appeared in the "charleston post and courier" she reads, quote, pay attention to the negative ads but pay closer attention to the groups behind the ads. and remember, they may b

they said let's call it sanford. >> fred sanford was his brother. that is right. >> he had a major drug issue going on. it was something everybody knew about. he had a cocaine habit and was very open about it. he wore a spoon around his neck and would take the spoon and snort it. he was open about it. but at that time in hollywood, drugs were rampid. it never affected his work. >> he was making tremendous amounts of money. he ran into problems with the irs. he never believed in paying this taxes and it caught up to him at the end. there had been hiccups and in 1989 before he died. the irs came and raided his house. took about everything he owned including a watch that elvis gave him. he lhad worked out a payment agreement with rushed him across the street and died later that night. >> we talked about sanford and son. many people remember him from that. how would you describe that show at the time? how mercury received it? >> it was controversial at the time because there had never been an african-american who had head lined a network show. this was built around an

in the past, district supervisor's have lost sight of the fact that we do represent sanford cisco as a whole, and we need to major in city hall that we are acting policies, laws, and legislation that will of the city forward as a whole. there are a lot of issues like that. i mentioned job creation, pensions. a lot of them are economic, but some of them are more than that, making sure we continue to have dialogue with the 49ers. that is something that is not necessarily economic but something that matters to the city as a whole. it is a big part of what i look forward to doing in city hall. >> what are the specific thoughts you have on how the city can deal with budget issues? >> i think of two things. i'm not one the things that we can raise revenue and that is going to solve out of our problems -- i'm not one who thinks that we can raise revenue, and that will solve all our problems. we need to look at what we do as a city and was services we offer. we have 26,000 city employees. our payroll and fringe benefits for city employees accounts for over 60% of our budget. if we are not wi

. >> we've been talking with sanford levinson, a professor at university of texas about his book "constitutional faith." thank you, professor. >> oh, thank you. >> booktv talked with julia about her book, "tales for little rebels," and the interview was conducted at the university of texas as part of booktv's college series. >> we are here at the university of texas in austin talking with professors who are also author, and now we are joined by julia mickenberg, co-editor of this book, "tales of little rebels: a collection of children's literature." what are these tales for little rebels? >> what are these tales for little rebels? well, my co-editor and i, phil nell, we tried to find a balance of pieces that would represent works of literature created for children by representatives of radical movements throughout the 20th century, so we have things from the socialist movement in the early 20th century from the come mewist movement in the 1920s and 1930s, and we have stuff representing the new left, feminism, and kind of the whole range, and we could have started earlier. there was chirp's liter
