i always loved sanford cisco in college, and i just wanted to try it out. i started working in economic development policy. i was a community organizer for six years. i worked with young people, parents, and families around issues that concern our neighborhoods, whether it was improving muni lines, affordable housing, public schools, or just planning issues in neighborhoods. we just had a hearing last week, and we are trying to do some work around bedbug enforcement, which is a major issue in the tenderloin and of hill and 63. a hearing will actually be on thursday, april 7, 10:30. we're doing our first hearing on pedestrian safety. i think public safety is a huge concern. it ranges from both low-level crimes to pedestrian safety, and so that is a really important issue to me. we are probably more than double what every other district has. and that are preventable. and we can do better. district 6 is one -- home to one of the most diverse constituencies. we have the poorest residents in san francisco. we have lgbt. we have immigrants, people of color, youth

the ex-wife of mark sanford joins us tonight. she says she's lived this story and it will count politically. finally, let me finish with an unpleasant reminder. while mitt romney may be headed for 1 for 3 in the political arena that newt gingrich is already in the clubhouse with his 1 for 3 in the marital arena. we start with the final 48 hours. with me is mark halperin and john, both msnbc political analysts. let's look at numbers. newt gingrich has a fighting chance to carry south carolina. new numbers out today from the nbc news/marist poll show republicans have mitt romney ahead of the pack. but the two-day poll show a rise for newt gingrich following his debate monday night. before the debate on monday, romney led by 15 points. but after the debate on tuesday, that lead shrank to just 5 points. a ten-point net gain for newt in just one day. in addition to those results, four other polls considered to be somewhat less reliable show gingrich leading romney in south carolina. let's start with mark. how do you read the situation

sanford, thanks for joining us tonight.ill. how do you see that race going down there on saturday? >> you know, i think it's going to come down to the wire, chris. i think it's kind of a crazy race, actually. there's still a lot of undecided people i talked to and a lot of accusations. big changes even today in the race as we go down to the wire. i think it's going to be a fascinating race. i think romney still has a solid footing here if you will. but santorum is nipping at his heels and gingrich is especially nipping at his heels, especially with perry's endorsement. >> let's take a look at something. you knew this was coming. here's marianne gingrich talking to abc about what happened with them with her and her then husband. let's look at the tape and then i'll get your response. >> you want me all to yourself. calista doesn't care what i do. >> what was he saying, do you think? >> he was asking to have an open marriage, and i refused. >> he wanted an open marriage? >> yeah, that i accept the fact that he has somebody el

we talked to mark sanford, economy and jobs is the main issue among voters heading to the polls today. you would think therefore that might give the advantage to mitt romeny's giving his business background you yet newt gingrich is trending upward and upward. how do you make sense to that. >> i would look around, what does it mean for the president. this is state that is more typical of the rest of the nation than iowa and new hampshire with there better than average and growth. south carolina, not every state has 9.9 unemployment. some of the problems in trying to get technology going and business going. it's indicative of most states in this country. it's this frustration what is evidence at least in lot of surveys you get and a lot of the executives i've talked to out of south carolina, they are frustrated with the pace and the way the country is going. it's almost anyone but the president. that is not a surprise to take on the incumbent. what you're talking about, who would they put their trust to get it turned around. we'll see tonight. but there is a willingness to accept a bold

i thought about asking about this when i saw jenny sanford said today that newt gingrich could never get her vote. how do you think the gingrich marriage issue is going to resinate in south carolina? >> i don't know that it will. you know, i think that there is going to be a phenomenon, quite honestly, i think and this is kind of counterintuitive, it may generate sympathy for him, having this kind of dirty laundry aired this close to a primary, people don't like that. the guy's been divorced twice, everyone knows he's had extramarital affairs, hearing details of it is not going to change people's votes at this point. he's talked about being imperfect, talked about forgiveness, so you mention evangelical voters, as important as family values are to them, the idea of grace and forgiveness is important to them also and because he's been candid about having asked for forgiveness and changing his life, i think there might be sympathy for him over that quite honestly. >> i think that there was some very good conversations around the country about your former boss, mark sanford, about that

back to the philadelphia area because that is where my family is, but i was always interested in sanford cisco in terms of the city, culture, the amazing lgbt community -- i was always interested in san francisco. i am an attorney. i started off in private practice, doing complex litigation. in 2002, i moved to the san francisco city attorney's office, where our work on the trial team, doing trials for the city and doing my own cases and supervising a team of attorneys as well. another huge issue confronting the city is the deferred maintenance on our infrastructure. we have a lot of infrastructure that has been deteriorating because we have not maintained it properly, from our roads to our sewer system to muni. we need to be much more diligent about maintaining our infrastructure. i have been interested in politics since i was a kid. i have worked on campaigns since i was a teenager. i was involved in campaigning against senator jesse helms when i was in college. when i came out here i was not initially involved politically. i was involved in community work, helping to build the lgbt co

and in the longer run like mark sanford, former governor of south carolina wife said i couldn't vote for newt gingrich. women will look at this and say, how did they treat his first wife and second wife? how does he behave in his personal life? and i think in the long run, it's going to be an almost prohibative factor for the nomination of newt gingrich for the republican party. >> newt is weak with women? you mean in that voting consequences? >> he is extremely weak with women. no doubt about it. and i found he's very strong among women. mitt romney. >> newt is a weak women voter. >> well, there's a gender gap with newt. if you look at the breakdown with votes, they go to mitt romney, they do not go to newt gingrich. and it doesn't just have to do with this. it has to do with his whole bombastic style. he's just not somebody who appeals to a -- he doesn't seem like a consensus builder, but the voters in south carolina loved the fact that he came out there, that he attacked the press. republicans hate the press more than they hate the breaches of virtue that have been in newt's past.
