sanjay gupta joins me with more. sanjay, a lot we don't know about the diagnosis.sident? >> well, some of the details are going to help make that picture a little clearer. clearly this is a cancer, it sound like, in or around the liver. around the liver, you have the gall bladder, you have the pancreas. cancer of any of the areas is obviously a pretty significant thing. what we hear today is that he had this operation ten days ago back on august 3rd. now they're saying in addition to that particular mass there is evidence that this cancer has spread beyond that area of the body as well. so, sound like he is going to get therapy which can come in the form of chemotherapy most likely. once they sort of give a better idea of exactly how big this cancer is, what it is exactly, how far it has spread, you are going to have a better idea. but anderson to your point for a younger person certainly this is a significant cancer. he is 90 years old. it will be tougher for him to endure that. >> obviously age is a major factor here? >> no question. i mean, age is a factor for a

sanjay, obviously very sad development.immy carter says doctors still don't know where the melanoma originated. he says that they expect more cancer to appear in other parts of the body. he's 90 years old. so what are his options for treatment? what is his prognosis? >> reporter: his options for treatment are a couple of things. one, he's going to get a type of chemotherapy drug and these options were laid out for him. he said he listened to the advice of his doctors. the chemotherapy drug is a drug that empowers your immune system, makes it stronger, better able to fight the cancer, and he's also going to start this afternoon, wolf, radiation therapy to the brain. these four areas of the brain that have evidence of melanoma, radiation is a good option there. it's something he's going to have to do every couple of weeks for some time. that's the plan. between conversations between the former president and his doctors. >> he was asked about his family's history of cancer, sanjay. his father, three siblings all had pancreatic

sanjay gupta joins us right now, our chief medical correspondent. sanjay, you were in that room, and before i get to the medicine here, let me just ask you about the experience itself because watching from afar here as i just said, it was arresting to hear the ease and the peace with which this former president spoke about the cancer and the battle he now faces. >> reporter: yeah. i agree, john. it felt that way in the room as well. he walked in punctual as always, he's known for that. a pair of jeans, a sports coat and tie, and sat down. made a couple jokes initially and then got right to it and described it in a lot of detail. wasn't looking at notes really and just described what has been going on with him over the last several months. there were a few months that were as you say arresting. at one point he said when i first heard about this i thought i had just a couple weeks to live. that was hard to hear, and i think that there was definitely a hush in the room when he said that as well. but he also talked about the fact that he's now going to

sanjay, how serious a problem is this in your estimation? >> well, you know, obviously there's some details that are still going to be forthcoming, don, as you mentioned: but, look, this is serious by what we're hearing so far. we don't know specifically where the cancer started. did it actually start in his liver? did it start in his pan kraes or gallbladder. these are all in the same part of the body. we know that it is spread. that was the news today. he had this operation back on august 3rd. did it spread to lymph nodes or other organs, these are some of the facts that are going to come out. this is serious. serious for someone who is five decades younger, certainly. the cancer itself, he's 90 years old. isn't it remarkable how active he's been? he's been traveling and the world, but this is certainly going to take a toll. >> at his age, what's the course of action for someone his age? >> a lot of times, you have to obviously pinpoint what this cancer is, how aggressive it's behaving, where it's spread. all of those yquestions aside, how

sanjay gupta is with me live. i'll remind you sanjay is a brain surgeon himself, practicing. he's at the carter presidential center now in atlanta. dr. gupta, i want to you help me sort through what i think has a lot of people confounded and that's the four spots of melanoma and as the president said on his brain. people think melanoma is on the skin, but can you sort this out? >> reporter: yes. it was a bit of a surprise, and i should point out nobody really knew this until president carter said that. no one besides his doctors and his family. what it really means is the melanoma, which likely started on his skin, although can sometimes start elsewhere inside the body, has spread and spread to the live. that was the operation he had back on august 3rd. and as he revealed today it has spread to his brain. he said there are very small lesions on the brain. he will get radiation therapy. the size of the lesions don't matter. it's the fact the melanoma has spread and that's the focus of the treatment to try to kill the melanoma wherever it is in his body. >> he's going to be 91

sanjay gupta. >> reporter: we are not sure what type of cancer this is yet.oved from in and around his liver. this is representative of liver cancer. other organs, gall bladder and pancreas for example. we know it spread. did it spread to lymph nodes? what we are hearing, he is planning to undergo treatment for this. that is upon detail. christine, you may know this, he has a strong family history of pancreatic cancer. his father died of pancreatic cancer. every one of his siblings died of pancreatic cancer and his mother developed pancreatic cancer. not sure why, but it appears a strong family history. that is something that will be looked at obviously with regard to the former president. we understand that he had been getting scans for screening purposes because of the family history up until recently, ct scans. he was getting blood tests to see if he was developing early signs. it may have been a blood test that necessitated the operation he had on august 3rd. at that point, they removed the small mass from around his liver. they determined that he had evi

sanjay gupta. you were there at the press conference at the carter center. also joining me, presidential historian, douglas brinkley. thank you both for being here. sanjay, let me begin with you. how treatable is this form of melanoma with four spots on the brain? >> it's a tough diagnosis, poppy. you know, this is one of the more challenging cancers to treat regardless of your age it would be a tough cancer to treat. having said that, the type of treatment that he's going to get, the chemotherapy type treatment is a relatively new medication. it was approved in september of last year. so we don't know really how well these drugs are going to work in the long term. one of these drugs could offer a lot of benefit to someone like president carter. that's what they are hoping for. in addition to that, this afternoon he's going to start getting separately from the chemotherapy, he's going to get radiation therapy to the brain for the four spots that he talked about. so this is ongoing. he's in very good spirits. he walked into that room, a lot of energy. wearing

[laughter] >> i have a couple of questions, about the medical aspects. you became ill in may. they had an mri that should deliver mass but it wasn't until two months later in my understanding from your comments you had the operation. i'm wondering about that time. was there a consideration not to do anything during that time. you're following the recommendations of your doctor, how would you rate the options? pres. carter: the complete rundown on the options that were available. when they made a recommendation on the particular medical treatment, i took their advice. we knew, i would say, the end of june, that i had to have an operation on my liver. i had extensive book to her were -- tour scheduled in 14 to 15 cities and i wanted to do that and the doctors told me there was a slow-growing cancer. incidentally, my surgeon was scheduled for a vacation trip in spain. the culmination of all those things just caused me to wait until everything was ready. so i stayed very busy during that

sanjay gupta is here to talk about that. so, dr.upta, president carter has not revealed what type of cancer he has. he did say that there were signs of it on his level, that it spread. from what you can read from that statement, what does that tell you about the prognosis? >> well, you know, it's tough to speculate on the prognosis without knowing a little bit more information, but overall, jim, as you might guess is these are some ominous signs. what they're still going to try and figure out is there's this mass on the liver. is that from where the cancer originated, or did it come from another organ in the area such as the pancreas or gallbladder or even the intestines. but the fact that he mentioned did it spread, did it spread to the lymph nodes or other area. it's a tough diagnosis, even for someone who is five decades younger, it would be a tough diagnosis. the treatment can be really hard to endure. >> i was going to ask you about that, because he's 90 years old. you talk about chemo and radiation, that's hard for a young man

sanjay gupta was at the press conference. he joins us now. sanjay, it is great to talk to you.he treatments, et cetera. we have to start with how remarkable this was. the former president discussing his own mortality. >> it felt historic for that regard. i was thinking about it, for many of us, you know, you remember reagan and the letter he wrote about his alzheimers disease. president clinton had heart surgery at a former president. it was for an urgent matter. he didn't have a chance to address people like jimmy carter did, president carter did. it was emotional in the room. he was so candid, came out wearing blue jeans, made a couple jokes. he looked good. he said he wants to build houses in nepal later this fall. he wants to do that. remarkable. >> it says something. you talked to us before about what a powerful force that is. let's talk about the reality with his diagnosis. he talked a little bit about how he's going to be treated. the treat me she faces. >> he has melanoma that is met static. that means it spread throughout his body. it is in his liver and he revealed al

sanjay gupta with cnn. >> i know.l these other questions and i get to you. >> a couple questions more specific about the medical aspects, you became ill in may and came back early to the united states, they had an mri that showed a mass but not until two months later that you had the operation. i wonder about that time period. was their consideration not to do anything in that time period? also quickly the medication use it you are following recommendations of your doctor were you given options and how did you do the options? >> i was given a complete rundown of the options that were available. when they made recommendations on medical treatment that i had yesterday i took their advice and we knew, i would say if an end of june ahead have june ahe my liver. it was low crowing cancer that would make no difference from the middle of july and third day of august so we scheduled not going through with the book tour and more importantly my surgeon scheduled a vacation trip in spain. the combination of all those things cost

[laughter] president carter: i have been taking all these questions so i can get to you. >> i have a couple questions about more specific about the medical aspects. you said you had an mri that showed a liver mass and it was not until two months later that you had the operation. president carter: that's right. >> i am wondering about that time. was there a consideration not to do anything? and also were there any medications, were you given options of how did you wait of options? president carter: i was given a complete rundown on the options that were available. when they made a recommendation i took their advice. -- i would say the end of june, that i had to have an operation on my liver. but i had an extensive book tour scheduled, 14 or 15 cities. i wanted to do that. the doctors told me it was a very slow growing cancer, it would not make any difference between the end of july and the third day of august. we scheduled it when i got through with the book tour. incidentally, and mor

sanjay gupta is here. what was that like for the president? was an emotional press conference certainly for sure. he got up there. he was in a pair of blue jeans. i can tell you. there's a picture of what it might look like. you go into a machine and that's a sort of mask that helps hold you face into a particular position. and they sort of zero in on these particular areas of the brain, those four areas that president carter mentioned to try and actually provide radiation to those areas only. >> so that holooks horribly uncomfortable and claustrophobic. >> some people do get claustrophobic. probably looks a little bit worse than it is. that's sort of to held the head and face into place. and then you're in the machine for a little while. >> what's a little while? >> it depends. you have to plan to get four separate areas. it could be an hour and a half. you're planning in between each particular phase of the radiation. it's a commonly done thing. but again it is probably claustrophobic. and you've got to sit there for some time. >> i've heard

sanjay gupta, joining us on the phone. this is a limited statement about the former president's health situation. what does this mean, especially with someone of his age? >> yeah, certainly he doesn't specifically say what type of cancer it was, whether it's liver cancer specifically or cancer of other organs in that area, gallbladder or pancreas. but certainly to your point, he's 90 years old, this is a tough cancer for everybody, but more difficult when you're older. treatment can be very difficult as well. he has said, my understanding is he is going to pursue treatment. i should point out, you know, that jimmy carter and his family has a very strong history of pancreatic cancer. many may not know this. every one of his siblings died of pancreatic cancer. he mother had that as wet. there's a strong genetic history there. we'll probably get more information here in the next couple days, about specifically what cancer, and where has it spread in to other organs, to lymph nodes around the organs? all of that makes a differ
