sanjay gupta. keep reporting on these additional states, these additional cases, the spread of zika something they anticipated or is this sort of, you know, aharm bells ringing? >> i think they anticipated this. keep in mind all the people who have come back to the united states, those are people who are infected, have come back from one of these countries where zika is spreading. besides that situation in texas you mentioned where a man brought back zika and then through sex was -- ineffected somebody else. everyone else in the united states got this somewhere else and brought it back. that was expected. what they think will likely happen, although in very, very small amounts, is some local spread. probably in south florida, south texas. those are the areas where this type of virus has spread before. >> we were talking during the commercial break, so the originating country you said was uganda, spread to south america. one of the countries where it spread, brazil. now these growing calls to possib

sanjay gupta joins me now live from cdc headquarters in atlanta where he just spoke with the agency'scdc is making pregnant women its priority here? >> no question about it. for the vast majority of people who get this infection, they'll have little or no symptoms. it's really women who are pregnant and specifically this link between the zika virus and birth defects. they do have some new guidance. first of all, men who have gone to one of these countries where zika is spreading, if they come back, if their wife or their girlfriend is pregnant, they are being told you've got to have protected sex or no sex for the duration of the pregnancy. this is pretty specific guidance. they're also saying for the women themselves, if your pregnant, you go to one of these countries, if you have any signs of illness, you've got to get tested while you're still sick. if you don't have signs of illness, you've got to get tested as early on as possible during your pregnancy and then another test just a few months later, so they're really getting specific on the sort of testing now that they're advisin

sanjay gupta joins us more on this.t more can you tell us about the spread of this virus through sexual contact? >> this was a confirmed case. there was suspicion, could this be spread via sex. but yesterday, the story was that a man who travelled to venezuela, he came back, he had some symptoms of zika infection. subsequently, he tested positive as did his sexual partner. the sexual partner was someone who hadn't left the state since 2008. so, again, they suspected that possibly this could be spread via sex but they weren't sure. keep in mind, you know, you think about infections like malaria, carol, that's transmitted via mosquitos but not sex. hiv, via sex but not mosquitos. this appears to be mosquitos and via sex. >> what will this woman do? >> keep in mind, if this is someone who is not pregnant, the vast majority of people won't have symptoms or they will have very mild symptoms. obviously, there's a lot of concern among women who are pregnant and in the early parts of their pregnancy. for other people, it's not

sanjay gupta with what you need to know. for people wondering about this. i think it bears repeating, what is zika, who does it most affect? >> zika is a virus that is spread primarily by mosquitos. it started from the zika forrest in uganda, got its name there. it traveled to many places around the world. most people who get this infection will probably not get sick they will probably not they don't have it because they will not get symptoms. the people it most affects, most concerned is women who are pregnant, in the early parts of their pregnant. the concern is not as much for them as it is their babies. there has been a correlation between this virus is and a birth defect known as microcephaly. >> are there any physical symptoms? >> yeah. it might feel like you have a milder flu. you may get rash around your body, joint aches, red eyes. you're just not going to feel well for a couple of days. again, if you get symptoms at all. you might think i caught a bug somewhere. >> they describe most of the people on our staff thes

cnn's chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta has details. >> so this is the blood sucker everyone'sgerous viruses that have spread around the world, including yellow fever, dengae, chicken gunja and zika. it's spreading in the caribbean, mexico and brazil. it's the site of this summer's olympic games. unlike other mosquito borne i willnesses, zika has become a particular concern to pregnant women because brazil is now the epicenter of a zika epidemic linked to babies born with microcephaly. the baby's head and brain don't develop. brazilian health officials say nearly 4200 babies have been born with this condition since october. that's compared to 146 in all of 2014. 51 of those babies have died. women living in brazil, el salvador, columbia, jamaica are now being told not to get pregnant at this time. in the united states the cdc is also sounding the alarm. >> pregnant women should consider deferring travel to areas where zika virus is currently circulating. >> also, if you've traveled to these destinations while pregnant, get tested, because 80% of those infected have no symptoms.

sanjay gupta joins us with more.e cdc regulations. >> what they found and they confirmed a couple days ago, this virus can be transmitted via sex sels as well as mosquit. a sexual partner tested positive who hadn't left the country since 2008. they say she received it from him. the guidance now is that if you've gone to one of these countries and come back and have the infection, and you're having -- if your wife is pregnant, you have to practice safe sex during the entire time of the pregnancy. you could transmit the virus now to someone who is already pregnant, and that's what they're trying to avoid. it still involves people who has gone to one of these countries and returned. but the guidance is for women who are pregnant. >> it's obvious if you have the zika virus, it's obvious, and people will know, right? so you don't have sex with your partner? >> not necessarily. i mean, look. most of the people, frankly, probably won't know. 80% of the people will have few symptoms. if you've gone to one of these countries
