sanjay gupta joins us now. sanjay, what have you learned? >> with senator mccain's permission, i spoke to his doctors at the mayo clinic earlier today, and they said the operation he had on friday revealed that he has a glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. that was what was causing his problems, omting above his left eye. this is the type of primary brain cancer. they didn't know. they just found this out after the pathologist looked under the microscope specifically at what was removed there from his brain. and that is what they found. as you point out, it's sad news. this is an aggressive type of brain cancer. and surprised everybody, anderson. >> what more can you tell us about this? a, just to repeat, this is -- you were given this information, or permission by the senator, by his family in order to broadcast this? >> yeah. with his permission, i spoke to the doctors. they asked that i talk to the doctors, get all this information about precisely what happened. we know that on friday morning, he went to the doctors basically

sanjay gupta who spoke with his daughter doctors, gloria joins me as well.y tell us what you know. >> remember he had this operation on friday don, he was having a blood cot removed from his left eye. that blood clot was within his brain and they moved a portion of the bone there to get to the brain. we found out over the last few hours now that that blood clot was caused by a brain tumor. some people may know that term but that is an aggressive cancer, a brain tumor and an aggressive cancer. i talked to the doctors, they say he did very well from the operation, they feel like they removed all of the tumor. he was sent home the next day and has been recovering at home. but with this particular type of tumor it always required a follow-up treatment. that's a discussion that john mccompany and his family are having right now with his doctors. everyone's thinking about him and rooting for him. i think they're thinking right now the best course of action going forward. >> i know you're not his doctor but when something like this happens what is the usual prognos

sanjay gupta, to you. no one better to talk about senator mccain's surgery because you are a neurosurgeon. >> when you read the description, he said he had an eyebrow incision and blood collection removed. i think it's more serious than that. when you feel your own eyebrow, you can feel the bone underneath that. as part of this procedure, senator mccain had that bone removed to gain access to the brain. i want to show you on the skull, right above your eye socket, it's this bone here in particular that was removed to gain access. you get a small incision, but it can give you a big opening there, to the brain. just to show you, again, here on this brain, once you have opened up that bone, you are gaining access to this part of the brain and what you hear is there was about a five centimeters, about two inches abnormality there. they call it a blood collection. we are not sure, essentially what it is until it's looked at under the micro scope. it's brain surgery. it's a good size operation. it's general an s

sanjay gupta joining us on the phone. sanjay, you know senator mccain's medical history very well.mined his medical records when he ran for president in 2008. give us a sense how serious this latest procedure was. >> wolf, when you read the initial descriptions it didn't sound that serious. you heard about an incision sort of in and around the eyebrow, and removal of a blood clot. what we've learned, though, i think, a statement released an incision made around the left eyebrow of senator mccain. you feel the left eyebrow, feel that bone behind there. that bone was actually removed. called a craniotomy. you do that to gain access to the brain. so this blood clot that they call it, five centimeters in size, was located in, or inside or just on top of the brain. that's a pretty significant procedure to expose the brain like that. we heard that he's doing well after the operation. that bone was placed back so, you know, he's -- that bone is now back in the appropriate position in the skull. the big question is, what exactly was that? abnormali abnormality. say a blood clot. was it cau

is it curable, sanjay? >> glioblastoma is not considered curable. as you point out for -- if there's a literature on this, the median survival is around 14 months. although, 10% of people survive five heres or more. it is going to require further treatment. typically, that is chemotherapy and radiation to that part of the brain. that is likely to begin if senator mccain chooses to do that. that will begin in the next three to four weeks after his incisions heal and he recovered from this surgery. that's likely the plan. again, this is what he and his family are discussing with doctors. we saw him yesterday. that's part of the discussions ongoing. >> if there was ever a fighter, it is john mccain. thank you for that reporting. >>> at any moment, attorney general jeff sessions is set to take questions. of course you see him there behind. this is all following the president's attack of his own attorney general in that interview with "the new york times." will he talk about it? >>> soon, o.j. simpson makes his case for freedom at a parole hearing. we ar

sanjay gupta, a neurosurgeon and medical correspondent is "outfront" with more.jay, you've spoken with mccain's doctors, of course, with the permission of mccain. what do you think about his travel to d.c.? is that safe? >> i don't think there's absolute rules on when somebody can travel, is what you'll hear most doctors say ten days after a brain operation like this. but, you know, he's been -- i will say that he's had a pretty quick recovery. we talked about this before. even the day after his surgery he was home. i talked to his doctors, as you mentioned. they said he's been up and about and has been going back and forth from his house to the hospital and all of that. it's not surprising at all that he's talking about this. he's at the outer window of being able to do this sort of thing. >> he had a craneotomy. is there any concern that altitude could affect his condition? >> that's the concern. when the cabin is pressurized, the ground, you know, if there's air, for example, whether it's brain surgery or surgery in a joint, air can expand and that can cause p

sanjay gupta joins me now. the big question everyone is asking, sanjay, is how long could mccain spend recovering here. what could you tell us? >> it could be a bit of time. i think the initial reports were that he had this blood clot above his eye, and it was removed on friday, but to be clear, what he had drone was a bit more aggressive than that. let me show you what i'm talking about. the incision was in hi eyebrow, to sort of high the incision, but you have bone there, what i think people didn't realize is that bone was actually removed as well to try and get access inside the skull to the brain. so reading those initial drips that's what people may have thought, so it's definitely more aggressive. it's a brain operation with general anesthesia, he's 80 years old, as far as how long it takes to recover, people recover at different rates. he's 80, but he's toughed, we know that. he's had a history of various medical problems. we don't know how this ties in exactly. we know he's up and about, but just the sw

sanjay gupta is sonnian s sanjay, are there risks?> they recommended take a couple of weeks before you fly. two weeks. not an exact rule here. he had a really quick recovery. his operation on july 14th, home the next day. that sort of, really, gives a sense it won't be as risky certainly to fly. the biggest concern, just so you know, is when -- this is true of any operation. that you can develop pockets of air after an operation, and with lower pressure, that air will expand. can happen after joint surgery, for example. can happen in the brain. but the doctors are not that concern and don't think there's significant amounts of air. this is how the conversation went, john. we don't necessarily recommend this but won't get in your way either. >> let me ask you a question. maybe outside of your bounds, you're a neurosurgeon. what about the psychology? we know senator mccain wants to be in the arena. somebody with a diagnose, not a great diagnosis, not looking three, five years down the road but the here and now. how much does that play i

let's bring in sanjay gupta. mccain has a long history with skin cancer.n to what treatment he might consider? >> it's a great question, two points about that. first of all, sometimes the treatment for other cancers, such as if you got radiation for another cancer, can increase your chances of developing something like this. i looked into that, and i reviewed his medical records back in 2008, it doesn't sound like that was the case. he didn't receive radiation at that time. that probably didn't increase his chances. so really shouldn't affect what treatment options are available to him. typically, it's chemotherapy and radiati radiation, sort of specified to that part of the brain. in combination, but there are other treatments, there's about 150 clinical trials, ongoing right now, jake, looking at all sorts of different things from vaccines to viral vectors to the polio virus as a potential sort of treatment. there may be various options. >> we shouldn't sugar coat, this is going to be a tough battle for the senator. you obviously mentioned chemotherapy a
