sanjay gupta. people are looking at this, sanjay, and they're wondering why is it so bad this year?ect it to go until at least the beginning of april. it really has to do with the type of flu strain. there is all these different types of flu that are out there. the one that's moving around a lot this year, as you pointed out most of the country, is h3n2. the last time that was circulating pretty widely was back in 2014-15 and that was a pretty bad flu season as well. you may remember, we've been lucky the past couple flu seasons, so this one seems much worse compared to recent years, but not that different to when this particular strain circulates. >> so what can you do to protect yourself? and also, at what point if you have the flu, or you think you may have the flu do you say, okay, i need to go in and get some medical help? >> for the first question, i would still say the flu shot is important. i know people are sometimes skeptical of the flu shot. this year they say it's about 30% effective, which is not great. in previous years it's been 60, 70% effective. but it's still bette

doctor sanjay gupta with more, what are we learning today? >> i think we'll learn about his overall physical health. we know he takes a cholesterol lowering medication for that and his weight. the number you see in terms of cholesterol is based on his medication he's taking. it is about a four hour exam, they're going to focus on his heart and things like stroke and cancer screenings and may ask him about anxiety and depression and stress, those are standard questions that are asked. we heard about his lifestyle over the last year, his lack of exercise and the impact of that on his physical health, those are things they'll want to probe as well. it is a thorough exam and what you have heard is the mental health component of it is not likely to be done and to be fair, it is not typically done of the last 16 years that i have been covering these stories, it is not typically done and it does not sound like it will be done anyway. >> sanjay, stick around. there are growing questions of the president's mental fitness. briefed members of the congre

sanjay gupta. sanjay, we all know someone, rig right, who has gotten the flu this year.o hear about these deaths, the numbers are staggering. how many sick does the cdc say we have now? >> we don't really know the numbers. there are a lot of people sick. there are millions who have been ill. a lot of times people don't go to the hospital, the emergency room or get tested. we don't exactly know what the number of flu-related illnesses there are. we do know that there's been several thousand people who have been hospitalized for this and, obviously, as you just said, brooke, we know the number of people who have died. this is a particularly bad flu season. you know, we have not seen a flu season quite like this in several years. 2014-15 was also bad. in terms of how widespread this is, this is the entire united states. every state has widespread flu activity except hawaii basically. this is widespread and extensively. >> that's the worst map i've ever seen. every single state is red. when you say people aren't seeing doctors, going to the hospital. when should they do so?

sanjay gupta joins us now.re's not a lot from the doctor, no detail that we're seeing tonight. but what do you make of the statement and what do you hope will be released on tuesday? because he says there will be some details published on tuesday. >> well, it's a little deja vu, i'll tell you, jim. first of all, this exceptionally well and in excellent health. it was just two lines. it was about 4 1/2 hours the president had at walter reed. i presume they did a pretty thorough exam. but as you mentioned on tuesday, hopefully the doctor's going to come out and brief reporters, hopefully take some questions as well because this was the briefest summary i think i've ever seen with regard to a presidential health exam. >> listen, he's an elect eed -- you might say the american people have a right to know. but how much do we know about the president's health right now and how does it compare to what we knew about past presidents? >> well, it's interesting. you know, from his sort of baseline exam, if you will, just

sanjay gupta who was at yesterday's briefing.t to get to your findings because you see something different in the lab results than the white house doctor does. but first i want to just play a moment from that briefing when a reporter asked sort of the burning question of how the president can be in such peak health when we know a lot about his diet. so watch this moment. >> can you tell me how a guy who eats mcdonald's and diet cokes and never exercises is in as good shape as you said he is in. >> it's called genetics. i don't know. some people have great genes. i told the president if he had a healthier diet he might live to be 200 years old. i don't know. he has incredible genes. >> if he cleans up his diet he could live to be 200 years old. what did you see here yesterday? >> you know, it's interesting. when you talk about excellent health, you're talking about someone who needs medication for cholesterol and is borderline obese and trying to reconcile that with excellent health is the question john was driving at and a lot of

sanjay gupta joins us now. what might we learn, sanjay? >> we know a few things about his health.t the basics, his height, his weight. he takes certain medications, one to lower his cholesterol. he takes propecia for hair loss, low dose aspirin. we know the basics. he has had a lifestyle that consists of eating lots of fast food. he is not getting much exercise. lots of stress. the question then becomes what's the impact of that sort of lifestyle in the first year of the presidency and all the stressors of the presidency on his physical health now? it's a pretty detailed exam. they check his heart, his lungs. those are the big concerns of someone of his age, any risk factors for stroke, applicable cancer screenings. he gets asked about anxiety, stress, depression just as a standard with a primary physical exam like this. those are the sorts of things we'll get. as you know, as we have said, this is not a mandatory exam. there is no requirement that any of the results be released or that they all be released. we'll have to see what we find out. >> we will only find out what they wa

sanjay gupta was at the briefing. this remarkable briefing. he has more from the white house. >> reporter: i got to say, first of all, i've never seen anything quite like this. i've been covering these sorts of stories for some 16 years now. having the white house doctor come out, speak to the press, take basically every last question they had to ask for about an hour was a pretty remarkable thing. all sorts of things were asked. the two big areas were his heart health and his mental health. with regard to his heart health, we know that the president is borderline obese. he has high cholesterol and evidence of heart disease. over the last year since he's become president, those numbers have worsened a bit. which is why the doctor increased the dosage of his cholesterol-lowering medications. the doctor clear they tested to evaluate the function of the heart. regardless of risk factors, how is the heart now? based on things like an echocardiogram and a stress test, his heart's doing well. in fact, he has no concerns for the rest of the term. he

sanjay gupta to help understand what'ser happening and how we can protect ourselves. the cdc numbers. nearly 40 kids have died. that's scary for a parent. >> it's frightening. you and i both have young children. it's really scary. if you look at the last couple of years, we haven't seen these kinds of numbers where this many kids have died. it has happened in the past and it'ser worth reminding people how deadly flu can be. especially in young children, the elderly, people who have some sort of underlying medical illness. it's a problematic disease. >> there are some reports of kids and adults who started as the flu and in one case ended up as septic shock. in another case it ended up as pneumonia. is flu the precursor? >> this is a good point. you can get a viral pneumonia. this is a flu virus causing a pneumonia. what happened in these cases often is if you look at the child. they had the flu. they felt better. they actually seemed to be recovering and then it came back. what came back is what they call the secondary infection or a bacterial infection. and that's a

sanjay gupta. thanks so much for being with us.is point, the president's personal physician during the campaign aside, what do we know about the president's health? >> well, we kind of know the basics i would say, john, his height, weight. he's 6'3", he says 236 pounds making him a little bit overweight. we know there's a concern about cholesterol levels for him. he takes a staten medication. he also takes an antibiotic, he takes a pediatric aspirin. these are things that were released as a summary of his overall health. we've gotten some more insights, not so much from his doctors or medical exam in the past but more from his recent descriptions of his diet for example. but in terms of his objective medical records, there's just the basics that we have so far. >> so what will we learn and i suppose just as importantly, what will we not learn tomorrow? >> that's a good way of phrasing it. first of all, in terms of what we learned, a lot has been made about his life-style and the stresses of the presidency. we will -- i guess the be
