sanjay gupta. great to have you. i, over breakfast, this morning, try not to think too hard about what a compound fracture is because it sounds horribly painful. what do you hear in that statement from the doctor? >> yeah, no, it's tough to think about. certainly first thing in the morning or any time. he had significant injuries to his -- to the lower part of his right leg. that's what they're talking about in this. open fracture. that basically means it was open. the bone actually coming through the skin. comminuted, different areas of the tibia and fibula, the two bones of the lower leg. at least a couple of different places where those bones were fractured. so there was a lot of energy that was absorbed into the ankle that had a lot of fractured bones and then into the lower part of his leg. so that's what we know. we also know that the muscles around those bones became quite swollen and if you think about if you feel your own leg, the muscles, you feel the muscles and they're encased by a harder layer of tissue,

sanjay, what is that? >> well, you know, the answer is you basically have data on one dose for three or four weeks because these -- after that, depending on whether it's pfizer or moderna you have a second dose. so science would say, hey, look, it's very reasonable that a single dose would offer you longstanding and strong protection, but we just don't know that for sure. i think the thing they're trying to avoid is, let's say somebody gets a single dose and subsequently does get sick. it may shake confidence overall in the vaccine. in a time when you have vaccine hesitancy already of concern, that could worsen it. so they say follow the science. i talk to michael osterholm about this all the time and he makes good points. you're starting to see increased data showing the benefits of one dose. and given that supply is still being outstripped by demand, we may have to go in that direction. or maybe even lower the amount of the moderna dose because that gives more than enough protection. but we're not there

sanjay gupta, our chief medical correspondent. sanjay, you've been following this now for the past few hours. we're getting not a whole lot of information about his medical condition. but what do you hear, what do you suspect? >> well, we've got a few more details just now. we hear about the nature of the collision, high speed, rolled several hundred feet, and that tiger woods was extricated from the vehicle through the windshield. what they also said at that point was that they basically -- they used the term, they "packaged" him, a trauma/triage term, which means they prepared him to be transported. they also said at the time of that transport, he was in stable condition. so these are a few additional details. >> sanjay, hold on for a moment, they're back in english, i want to hear what they're saying. >> anything more specific about that? and also you made mention that lifesaving efforts were performed. can you be more specific about that? >> the deputies arrived on scene. there is a vehicle that's rolled over, there's someone

sanjay gupta.what this new lab study of the pfizer vaccine actually shows. >> yeah. it's sort of fascinating, wolf. what they do is they basically engineer the virus with these mutations such as the south african variant, as you described, and really fully engineer it. so you'll see all of the various mutations. and then they basically saying okay, we're going to put it and test it against this vaccine. and what they find is that the amount of antibodies that are produced and are effective against this new virus is lower as compared to the more commonly circulating coronavirus. but not so low that it doesn't still seem to neutralize the virus. so the mutations clearly seem to have some sort of effect here but not so much that it should necessarily make a difference. it's a lab study, wolf. this is all in the lab. you're engineering the virus. you're exposing it to the vaccine in the lab. but this gives you an idea of how effective the vaccines might be in real life. >> it comes on the heels of anot

sanjay gupta, is joining us. sanjay, this new johnson & johnson vaccine, single dose, looks to be on track for authorization in the next few days. what would you say to someone who is worried this vaccine might not be quite as effective as the pfizer or moderna double dose shots? >> well, you know, we've been looking at all this data. that's probably what people might be reacting to. i don't know if we have some of the numbers. we can show them. what i would tell people -- i've had this conversation with lots of people, is that the vaccine in terms of what it can do for people, if you focus on the right side of the screen, no hospitalizations and no deaths after a month after someone received the vaccine, which is pretty remarkable. that's a good vaccine. i think it gives people a peace of mind. the left side of the screen does paint this picture that there's some efficacy fade in response to the variants. so in places like south africa where the variants made up the majority of the cases, you see that the vaccin

sanjay gupta and also, cnn mec nrkscnn medical correspondent. johnson data came out when we were on tv this morning and we were reading it in realtime. you had all day to go through it. what's important? what do the numbers mean? >> you know what my day has been like, john. let me show you the numbers because as you point out, i think there is some good news here. this is what the fda is going to be looking at to determine whether or not they will authorize the vaccine. the numbers on the left are basically the protection this vaccine offers against moderate to severe disease. you mentioned that if you look at the bottom line on the left south africa, that trial done in south africa, most of the virus circulating was the variant from south africa. previously they said it was 57% protected. now 64%. some out numbers have gone up. really, it's that number on the right that will be so critically important across the board, you know, this vaccine is 85% protective against, what people care about the most. that they would get very sick. may need to b

sanjay gupta. good to see you, dr. sanjay. i like to respect people's titles. i know we're friends.e know johnson & johnson is a single-shot vaccine. what else do we know about it, sanjay? >> well, you know, we saw the results that came back out of this clinical trial. and there were all these numbers people were looking at. and i want to show you this, don, because a lot of people were analyzing this data. 85% protective against people really getting sick. this is the sort of thing, people out there for the last year, especially people who might be older or have some pre-existing condition, 85% protective against getting really sick. no hospitalizations. if i can for a second, if you look at all the trials that have gone out, five big clinical trials for these vaccines, 75,000 people have received the vaccine in these trials, nobody died in that vaccinated group. point is that these vaccines work. we'll see. it takes a few weeks to go through the regulatory process. this is a big deal. >> you have a comparison you want to tell us about? you have some sound for us? >> yeah. so which

sanjay gupta. doctor, you were there. you just voted. it was a 22-0 recommendation, you just told me. tell us what happened. >> we went through in detail for hours all the safety data, all the efficacy data and came to this conclusion. this is a single-dose vaccine. it's refrigerator stable, meaning it can be in the refrigerator for three months. you can ship it and store it at refrigerator temperatures. it's 74% effective in the u.s. at preventing moderate illness, 85% effective at preventing severe illness, 100% effective at preventing hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions. it's another weapon now in this fight against this awful virus. >> you only need one dose, right? no recommendation that maybe a booster shot should be available a month later or whatever? >> well, there are currently ongoing a two-dose trial in the united states as well as a number of other countries. we may find, probably in the second half of the year, that a second dose induces even better immunity. but this is a fluid situation regarding boosting.

sanjay gupta.y, let's start with michael osterholm's proposal to delay second doses, give second doses to as many people as possible so more people get a first dose. cdc has said they're not going to do that. what do you think? >> well, you know, i think that the data sort of speaks for itself here a little bit. although there's a couple of caveats. let me show you what i mean here. the reality is that there does some to be some protection from the first dose. moderna specifically, one dose versus two doses. with the first dose, you get about 80% or so protection. with the two doses, as we know, it goes to 94.5% protection. now, we don't have as much data around that first dose because it was only a few weeks they followed people in between the first and second doses. how long does that protection last? we doesn't know. cdc has come out and said you can wait up to 42 days, six weeks, before you get the second dose as it is. there may be some merit to it. from pfizer, jake, we talked about this when

sanjay gupta. sanjay, this news comes as the u.s.mber of new infections in months. a fraction of where it was at the peak last fall. we spoke with dr. paul offit last week. his theory is that more of the country has been exposed than those numbers indicate there. 27 million people. therefore, more of the country, perhaps three or four times, has some immunity. i wonder if you agree with that. >> yeah, no, i do. and i talked to paul offit about this. some 27 million confirmed infections. but as you point out, the model suggests that because we were so -- we were undertesting for so long, the actual numbers of exposures are probably closer to 90 to 100 million. and they probably have some degree of immunity. we've seen that same sort of -- that same population immunity account for decreasing rates in other countries around the world, for example, like india. so it's quite possible. add to that that they seem to have more adherence to the basic public health strategies we've been talking about for a year and probably coming off some of

that is great news as well. >> our chief medical correspondent sanjay gupta, good morning, sanjay. >>rning. >> promising news on this time line for oxford astrazeneca and it is not peer reviewed but encouraging that oxford said and by the way it works against the u.k. variant, too? >> absolutely. and this is the key question i think a lot of people are asking right now. we know the virus is mutating and these variants are emerging. do these vaccines, which induce all sorts of different immunity in the body, do they provide enough coverage for the variant and as you said, i looked at some of the data, it is early data out of astrazeneca. we've been following the trial since its inception and it does seem to be effective against the variants. we're obviously going to want to see the final data to confirm that. why four to six weeks from now to get some of this data? that is typically dictated by the fact that you need to have at least two months of safety data as well as you remember. this is a back and forth that occurred before pfizer got authorized. that is what is typically dictatin

sanjay gupta is with us now. sanjay, these variants. i mean, kind of the new thing scary and we are learning about this new york one a day after researchers revealed they found a variant in california that may cause more severe sickness as well as re's zisistance to vacc. how worried should people be? >> with the new york one we're not sure yet because we're not sure how much this is going to spread on a problem it will be in terms of vaccine immunity escape. the protective vaccines. the other one we're talking about more, we know they're present in the united states and growing in numbers. such as the one that started off in the uk. it's increasingly because of its transmissibility, increasingly becoming a more dominant strain in this country and we have to keep an eye to see if it continues to mutate in a way that makes it concerning in terms of vaccine protection. the thing about these variants. it's interesting, brianna. look at them scientifically, many are occurring around the same area giving a clu e if we need to protect against

so sanjay, the johnson & johnson vaccine we expect to be approved tomorrow.ers flying around without context, will that be a major hurdle? >> i think it's a little battle. i don't know there will be a major hurdle. i think it got to be explained well but what people often see is one number and they pit it against another number and say that is more effective. i'll have that one. we can put the numbers on the screen. it's worth explaining again. it is true that if you look at the johnson & johnson numbers and how they sort of performed around the world, that you do see a lower effective. they paid attention to the number on the right side of the screen. 85% protection against severe disease. no hospitalizations in a month. no deaths at all. that's the sort of peace of mind i think people want from these vaccines. also, anderson, it's a point but the johnson & johnson vaccine was trialed at a different time and in different places as compared to other vaccines. i was trialed against a more serious disease. if you take the moderna and pfizer and trial them in th

sanjay gupta. sanjay, a lot of information in that release overnight that we just didn't know. the fact that it was the right leg. the rods and pins inserted, and then dr. faust at brigham women's hospital really focused in on the idea that the pressure needed to be relieved in the soft tissue and the muscles of the leg. what's the significance there? >> yeah, so you know, a couple of things. first of all, we knew some details last night, john. you and i were talking, but that was a snapshot in time, when he was taken to the hospital. you know, he was assessed to make sure he had no other injuries. because you're just not sure after an accident like that, it was a significant accident. are there other injuries that were just not clear at the actual scene? so, first of all, there is the good news in that, in that it doesn't appear that he's had any other sort of injuries to his head, torso, to his chest. all of that, important to note, as bad as this injury is, which i think dr. faust is right. i've spoken to a few orthopedic surgeons about this, as well. there's two simultaneou

because i don't. >> do you know, sanjay, what he meant by that?ess there's a little context here in that he was basically, before that, talking about the fact that the experts didn't know that there was asymptomatic spread, meaning that people could have no symptoms and still be spreading the virus. that the experts, you know, were three months -- there was coronavirus spreading in new york for three months before experts really knew how much spread there had been. you know, look, i found this really surprising. i've talked to governor cuomo a few times over this pandemic, and i found this really surprising. it is safe to say that nobody knew everything about this virus in the beginning, such as the nature of a novel virus. we didn't know that it would spread asymptomatically or that that would be a primary driver of the spread until the evidence proved that out. there was not enough testing. there's still not enough testing in this country, which is why the virus circulates in many areas for a long time before it's actually recognized. but what i

sanjay gupta joins us now. sanjay, how big a deal is this? this drop of a year of life expectancy in the u.s. >> i mean, it's a huge deal, jake. this is one of the things that we measure the progress and sort of how well we did as a society from a health care standpoint, and we're going in the wrong direction. almost since we started really measuring life expectancy regularly, the numbers have been going up. certainly in the developed world. there was some blips here over the last few years because of opioids had a significant impact, but a full-year drop. if you start to apply that across the population, you're talking about millions of life years that have been lost now because of this. and what we have to see, is this a trend now or does it go back up, you know, in a few years from now? >> and this report also found, even more troublingly, that life expectancy for black americans dropped 2.7 years. why? >> right. yeah. i mean, well, it's the same -- the same disparities that we've been talking about. all the things that have led to life ex

sanjay gupta.e been asking a lot of people about this and hearing kind of conflicting stories. peter hotez, we spoke to in the first hour said it might be as much as a weeks-allong delay, b i spoke to the head of the houston medical hospitals and he said they're already getting up to speed here. what are you hearing? how quickly can you make up for these delays? >> yeah, we're hearing yub, about a week as well. i've talked to a few people who have sort of been responsible for administering or actually getting the vaccines to some of these states. it's interesting, in some of these places, there's all sorts of different steps in the delay, if you are going to be sending these vaccines to a place that doesn't have power and you require the ultracold chain storage, that could be a problem. in other places that you heard earlier in the week, there were places that had the vaccine, worried about losing doses, because of lack of power. and they were administering quickly. but overall, about a week, which

sanjay gupta.with us this morning. >> i can't answer the questions, i just want to anssk them. >> you have all the answers already. >> j&j, emergency use authorization, what will this change for our country as we battle this pandemic? >> well, you know, there could be 100 million one-dose vaccines that essentially start to roll out, excuse me, within three weeks or so, you know, maybe beginning of march. if you look at the regulatory process for pfizer and moderna, moderna has been a little bit faster than pfizer's, but two to three weeks. i talked to the johnson & johnson guys right after i announced their phase iii data, and they've been manufacturing this vaccine for some time. at risk, as they call it. because they didn't know and still don't know if it's going to be authorized. the point is, they have several million doses available, ready to go, just like moderna and pfizer did. and they said they'll start shipping day after the emergency use authorization is granted, if it is. so i think it

sanjay gupta. so sanjay, johnson & johnson asking for the fda to authorize their vaccine.as started the rolling out process of getting their vaccine approved. what kind of impact will all this have in the u.s. in terms of getting shots? >> yeah, i think this will have a pretty significant impact. this is pretty extraordinary to think about the fact that we may have now three authorized vaccines within this time period. and i think it's worth noting that that -- if this johnson & johnson vaccine gets authorized it's a single-shot vaccine. so 100 million doses, as you point out by june, means 100 million people. which is obviously significant. a lot of people pay attention to the numbers in terms of how well this works. let me just show you quickly, when you look at the johnson & johnson vaccine a lot of people have been asking this question. is this as effective as the other vaccines? what do these numbers really mean? i don't know if we have them. but basically -- yeah, there we go. the bottom line is the number on the right, 85% protective against severe disease. you know

sanjay gupta. sanjay, i think we all just want a date certain.t's possible, but do you think -- i hadn't heard the end of july before. at times, we hear, okay, vaccines -- we might be able to be vaccinated in april, maybe may or june. maybe august. now he said end of july. is that one do you think we can take to the bank? >> i think, alisyn, we've been sort of tracking these numbers for some time. and i realize there's been a lot of back and forth. but when we've done the math, looking at just how many doses are both going to be available and when they're going to be available, that end of july sort of time frame, that was pretty clear and i think even still, when we do the math, i think the timeline is a little bit earlier than that. because if the pace continues the way it is now, everyone expects that the pace will go up, but even if it continues the way that it is now, you sort of get to middle of june when you start to get the majority of adults that are vaccinated. keep in mind. we're talking 240, 250 million adults. what president biden wa

sanjay gupta joins us now. i want to start with the white house's launch of this program that says it will ship vaccines directly to pharmacies across the country. what does it mean for people out there who wants to get vaccines? >> i think hopefully it will make it easier for people who want to get vaccines. typically neighborhood pharmacies are a place people know, along with their primary doctors. having the vaccine had those pharmacies and hopefully ultimately having a steady supply will make a difference. 10.5 million doses per week is now what the states are being promised overall. but there's going to be an additional million doses to the federal pharmacy retail program. that number is not obviously a big number. the hope, the expectation is that that will start to expand. remember, jake, some of the big pharmacies have been largely focused in the month of january, at least, on taking care of long-term care facility residents. hopefully now they can shift their attention to everyone else. >> sanjay, dr.

sanjay gupta, cnn's chief medical correspondent. sanjay, as we look at this, the good news, right, as we saw in will eaks's piece, hospitalizations, new cases, even dress are dropping, but the numbers are plateauing at fairly high less. i know that's concerning, and i know yesterday you spoke with the nih director francis collins who told you that there is a real risk here of another surge. >> yeah. i mean people have sort of raised this concern ever since we sort of identified some of these variants and recognized that they are -- that they are simply more transmissible, erica, so, you know, frankly just in the regular life, what you may have gotten away with in terms of not actually causing a -- a viral transmission may be harder if -- if the virus in fact is more contagious, so that -- that's what they are really talking about. i think the big question as we have asked all along through this pandemic is you see an increase in the number of people who are diagnosed. does that translate to a corresponding number of hospitalizations

but for now, testing is still critical. >> sanjay, on the school front. here's the latest cdc guidance. they say they need to see universal mask wearing. physical distancing. hand washing. cleaning of facilities and improved ventilation. contact tracing, isolation and quarantining. pardon my jaded nature, didn't we know that? haven't we known this for many months that those are the secret sauce right there? >> yeah, we could have put this graphic up about a year ago, i think, right? but i think that there is something to be said for the idea that there is now evidence behind this and plenty of examples of school systems around the country that, based on those strategies and those strategies alone, have been able to open and arguably open safely. meaning their transmission rates are very low within schools, and much lower than the community around them. the wisconsin study that everyone talks about quite a bit. 17 schools in rural wisconsin. they had a nearly 40% lower level of transmission in the schools as compared to the community around them. one thing

sanjay gupta. first of all, you know, it's good news compared to what i think we all feared earlier today. let's just say that. and we hope as the evening progresses, we learn more about tiger woods improving. but what is most concerning about his injuries so far? >> you know, they described his condition as being serious condition. which typically means that while it's not critical, he's having these periods of time where his vital signs may have become unstable. usually when you're talking about significant fractures like this, that's because of the bleeding that is associated with that. a significant amount of bleeding from the bone fractures in the legs. and also, they described them as a compound fracture, which is an open fracture, and the bone protrudes from the skin. that is something that would have been noticeable at the time of the injury. and that needs to be treated very quickly. but as you point out, there were lots of other clues. i was listening to the news conferences today, the de
