sanjay gupta. sanjay, you have good news for many parents this morning.ing to want to hear this news. this is the first time we're seeing data now about these vaccines in people this young, ages 5 to 11. so it's early data. i'll preface by saying that. it is coming from the company itself. it has held up well the last couple of years when we have seen it this way. this is children ages 5 to 11. what they did in this particular trial, they had about 2,300 participants and they got two doses of the covid vaccine but in a much smaller dose. they landed on a much smaller dose. we get as adults 30 micro grams. this was 10 micro grams, separated by 21 days. what they did then was they measured the antibody response basically saying, are these children that age group developing the same antibody response that we saw in older people who received a higher dose. the answer was yes. and pore importantly the vaccine appeared to be safe. the profile was similar to what they saw with people who are older. again, this is the first data we're seeing from pfizer, really f

sanjay gupta. a key member of the vaccine advisory committee. sanjay, how far will these few measures, including vaccine mandates go in actually combatting this pandemic? >> well, wolf, i'm not sure because we don't know exactly of the 100 million or so people that may be affected by some of these plans that kaitlyn was outlining, how many of them have already been vaccinated or how many already have some form of immunity. but if you look at the country as a whole and say 25% of adults are not vaccinated, that would mean 25 million of them may be affected by this. that makes a difference. i think there is two issues, though. one is it won't make a difference right away because it takes a while for that immunity to kick in. and we're in a tough spot right now. three and a half times the number of cases this year compared to this point last year. twice as many deaths right now compared to this point last year. so it is a tough spot and these plans won't have that sort of impact. also it is interesting because i think oftentimes the idea of mandate

sanjay gupta. what will happen to the quality of care at new york hospitals if the state suddenly loses tens of thousands of health care professionals? >> well, it's going to obviously be affected. we've been talking a lot about potential shortages because of covid patients but really the problem is you survey around the country, including what you're surveying in new york is staff. it's a significant problem. what happens is that hospitals will oftentimes then go on diversion, meaning they're not taking anything that's not emergent or urgent. regularly scheduled operations, things that are not urgent operations, those get postponed. delays. so it has a really significant down stream effect. we're seeing that at hospitals in atlanta as well. that's part of the issue. the mandate in new york went out middle of august. they said by today health care workers needed to be mandated and that's why these numbers are now coming to light in terms of what the shortages may look like. >> new york city teacher

i want to get a word in with sanjay gupta. so, sanjay, as more students across the country go back to school, are you concerned the infection rates now among kids are just going to go up? >> i think the absolute numbers are going to go up. i mean, this is just a sort of math issue at this point because as you're increasing the number of children who are infected, even if the ratio stays the same, the absolute number will go up. right now about 100,000 people in the hospital, 2% of them are children. as more and more are infected, even if a likelihood of your child getting sick, severely ill enough to go to the hospital is low, the statistics start to catch up with people. let me show you a graphic that came out of this free print from north carolina state university looking at the next three months. what do the next three months look like? what they say is in schools if there are none of these mitigation measures, no masking, no testing, you'll have 75%. 75% of k-12 students become infected. there's close to 50 million student
